p.2 #1 · corrupt RAW files

4 years ago had a similar problem - shooting raw w/1D's and would get a corrupt file every once in awhile. The frequency of corrupt files increased and the raid card in the computer died taking along w/it one of the mirrored HD's. Or maybe the HD died first - don't know for sure. New computer - no problems.

Ryan, is it happening everytime? Same image every time? I've personally never run into this issue yet (knocks on wood).

I use Sandisk Extreme IIIs, Sandisk reader and format my cards in camera after they've been copied and backed up.

- Check/update your camera firmware
- make sure you're not using the USB bus with something else at the same time
- card reader should be directly connected to the computer, not through a cheap hub
- make sure no other utilities are running at the same time
- I personally cut and paste the img folder from the card to my pc

If Sergio took that picture, this thread would be 8 pages long debating whether or not it was art... haha

So you have two Canon raw files of the same image one that's corrupted and one that's not? Are they the same size? Are you set-up to check for the differences between them? Can you put them up for download somewhere?

bad ram can cause this too, i use to have all of my images in my web browser do that and it was bad ram. People like to put the blame on all sorts of things, but this is a regular cause of bad ram. Especially since he said it happens on import/first try and he can re copy it and its fine. google memtest356 and test your ram.

UPDATE

GENIUS! You were TOTALLY right about this. Dumped a whole weekend worth of photos and not a single bad file! I was getting close to 1 of every 50 having to re-import due to this problem!!

Big help!

Sorry if I didn't read any of the previous threads, but I'll chime in on some experience I've had with this.

First and most importantly, if you are reading the CF card in camera, do the pics on the screen appear corrupted? If they are, then its a bad camera / CF card most likely. If the images on camera appear to be OK, then its a problem with the transfer of the image to the computer.

Please describe how you are transferring the image to the computer . . . are you copying straight from CF card to HD, or are you using a program (like LR or DPP) to "import" the pictures to the HD?

NM - just now saw the update . . .

Hey Spence

They look fine on camera. I've had this issue with about 5 brands of memory cards, three different card readers, and three different hard drives and downloaded them using different means of transport. In the end its the RAM.

I would normally throw the CF card into the internal card reader and dump. Nothing worked until I swapped out the ram.
