Answer is yes: this change improves color accuracy in RAW capture too.
Although it is sounds counterintuitive, I found I could not easily correct for the color shift even in RAW images, particularly those made in very warm light (interior incandescents). For example, in side-by-side RAW captures with the 5D2, I could click balance to make the whites match, but the other tones would be off. Adding green would help, but then the whites would shift too far.
The problem did not seem to be a simple color shift, but rather that some part of the color spectrum was actually missing from the file. I don't know if this was in fact the case, but this is how the files seemed to behave in post.
JPEGs were actually easier to correct, as the WB Shift function in the camera did a pretty good job of masking the problem. This shift is lost in a RAW file if you use anything other than "as shot" settings, however.

I've only had the firmware installed for about 24 hours and have noticed no "hidden improvements". However, I can happily report that the magenta cast is gone from my body. Files from the camera may still not match those from the 5-series for tonal quality, but the preset WB settings are now way closer.

Well, now that's interesting indeed. Heck, who am I kidding, I am going to upgrade to version 1.07 anyway. I like to keep things totally updated - that's just the way I am. If my toaster had firmware updates, I do those too!
Okay, I'm diggin' the changes with this new firmware. Here's a quick test shot from this morning:
(17-55 IS at 21mm, ISO 200, 1/15th @ f/3.5, off-camera 420EX fitted with a Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce inside a Lumiquest Softbox II held at camera right, -1EV ambient, -1/2 EV flash)
I've shot my kids in this room dozens of times and was never happy with the 50D. But in this picture the camera has completely nailed the colors--the couch, the skin tone, the green-golden glow from the window spill (the walls in this room are a warm shade of olive).
