I placed an order with Singh-Ray late last week for over US$1000 in filters, among them the Vari-N-Duo and was told my order would only ship this week. I'm very surprised to learn about the new thin mount version and I'm pretty annoyed that they did not tell me about it when I ordered. Surely they had some idea it was coming.
Anyway, I just called them, pretty annoyed, and was told my order shipped today. But get this, to make up for it, they are shipping me the thin-mount version and will credit me for the thicker one (including return shipping) as long as I return it within 10 days. (I'll probably be out the Canadian taxes though.)
Yes, I am annoyed that they did not tell me about this late last week when I ordered, but I am very impressed with their customer service and how they are going to correct this for me. Kudos to them!
Kudos to Singh-Ray My Vari-N-Duo was shipped on March 2. I haven't used it that much at all. I called Singh-Ray today seeing if they offered any kind of trade in allowance for a thin mount Vari-N-Duo. She asked Bob Singh and he said send it in and as long as it is ok they will trade me for the thin mount, I only have to pay the $50.00 difference and shipping charge, I was stoked I'm very pleased with the outcome hats off to Singh-Ray
The thin mount starts to vignette on the 40D with Sigma 10-20mm at about 12mm, so that's cool.
Had a few issues whilst out trying it out today. I think I need to spend some more time playing with this filter, I seem to be getting a cross bar effect on some of my shots
Here's a couple of my shots taken around midday to see what it can do.
i think you are seeing the uneven blocking that i saw. that is one of the reasons why i am cautious about using it and most of the time just use regular solid NDs with a CPL.

Herb...
Herb I'm not so sure. Only been out with it once so I could be wrong but I think what I was getting was to do with the polarizer (dark one side and not the other).
Here's a shot of it starting to vignette at 12mm on my Canon 40D.

If that's vignetting, why aren't all four corners equally darkened? dave
I thought that too. I just put it down to something to do with the polarizer showing it up. At no other length did this show and anything below this all four corners were clearly visible.

Polarizers on wide angle lenses will almost always produce uneven skies because the angle to the sun varies so much within the frame.
It was more to do with the obvious ring/shade effect in the top left hand corner that was of interest.
