While I don't know the answer to this (that one could be probably easily found out from specs...), I can tell you from personal experience that one combo focuses and the other doesn't (all that well). At f2.8, accurate AF is something that I really need.
So yesterday I borrowed a different 1.4x TC, and as expected / feared, the lens looked so much better with it than with mine. And all with 0 MA, too. So, the mk2 keeps being impressive.
Then as a reality check I plopped the 200/2 onto the camera and it was an awakening / refresher: the zoom is great, and insanely versatile. But the f2 is magic

Have kids? If so, if you show up with the 200/2 at the playground, it empties rather quickly. That can be both good and bad, depending on how social your kids are, among other things I carry it without the hood almost exclusively because of the intimidation factor.

It would be nice if you have the opportunity to update us about the 400 DO + 1.4 + 7D story. Thanks!

Hmm, yes. Women and children flee in horror before the 70-200. I can only imagine how it is with the 200/2.. Not exactly suitable for discrete street photography, is it?

Hardly - I don't own, and never owned, nor am I planning to own, a 7D. That was someone else

Stan, I've been finding that the 100L is great for kiddy type areas. Nice and black and not huge.

Yes, but too short and too ... narrow? As in, not wide open enough
As the wife would say, I know no shame. Plus by now people know me at the park

So, how did the AF work on the mkII with the 1.4TC? Was it still fast enough for sports? How about the IQ? Do you think this would equal the 300 f/4 IS?

Still, with any camera i hope you can use your 400DO with a TC again
I really think that 400mm is perfect for my needs. The few times that I used it with the 1.4x TC (on 1Ds2) it was fine, but you could see it not being so hot - for my standards anyway. So I just extrapolated to 7D pixel density and dismissed the thought outright

J.
IQ would equal or surpass the 300/4LIS (which I used to own). The AF speed was notably slower than without TC, and I don't have the AF speed of the 300 so well memorized anymore as to say if it's faster or slower. It was good enough for kids running around, on my 1Ds3.
The 300mm f/4 IS has very fast AF speed. It will completely track a running soccer player or alpine skier (slalom) real time. Will the mkII do the same?
The 300mm with a 1.4TC is too slow to do that. It *sorta* keeps up but not if it has to run the lens a long way.
Here's a mk2 shot with the 1.4x TC. Not the best shot, but the best one that I can show from yesterday http://files.me.com/stanj/v3bz2j
1Ds3 raw file, again.

The IQ degradation is visible, still not too shabby. Very usable for most practical purposes.
