KK - Interesting comparison of shots from both the 5D2 and the Mamiya. You captured the beautiful translucence of the petals with both cameras. What are your thoughts on the differences in shooting with the film medium format and the digital 5D2?
pjbishop, yes, this is an interesting shots, both camera shot at the same day and same time, not an AB test but we still can see the characteristic on the digital and film.
My feeling is that the film always provide a more "solid" image and nicer (warmer?) color. I donno if it is due to the grain structure or the color depth, scanner can do 48bit to make a file, the 5D2 is just about 14bit. However the 5D2 can make sharper and details picture much more easier.
KK, thanks for your reply. Sorry for delay in getting back. Your impression is that the film image seems to have more 'body', that in comparison, the digital image seems 'thinner'? I see that the Mamiya/Ectar images have a slightly 'creamier' look. Of course, the tone curves of film and digital differ substantially, and tone and color interact, so the curve will play on the color relationships, as well. I think it's somewhat harder to strike a color balance that seems the most felicitous with the digital RAW images. It's wonderful when it happens! Your images aren't the best for comparison, though, because you got superb pictures both ways.
