I got two labels both from IRVINE so I used one to send in my 1Ds MK III and one to send in my 24-70 for cleaning and calibration. I figure free shipping on Canon is the least they could do.

You might want to check because it will have to be sent to Virginia if it ended up in Irvine.
So this problem is only in AI Servo? Never really use anything other than the center point but back in Dec. I sent my MKIII back a 2nd time for the mirror adjustment but haven't tested it yet in AI Servo outdoors where I had all my issues, maybe I should.

For most cases that anything Newport. VA can do, Irvine amd Jamesburg can do, but just not for volume workflow I believe...I did talk with the CPS service in NJ, and they told me they will check and fix it if needed in NJ as my Mark III was there on Tuesday for other service....

Actually they sent the 1DMK3 to a lot of beta testers for 5 or 6 months. Of course Microsoft had over 1 million people beta test Vista also.
it's unbelievable none of the beta testers catch any of these AF/mirror problems in 6 months of field testing....
I just got my (ground) label for Virginia, and the thought of sending a 1Ds3 via mule from CA to VA is not appealing. I have pinged them if Irvine can do it and am waiting for a reply. Adding an extra week to be without a $8k camera while it's making its way on a brown truck is somewhat ridiculous.

Yeah, and everyone thought Canon didn't have anything special up their sleeves. Two unaffordable lenses, a firmware update and an AF recall - hallelujah.
Well at least the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 looks interesting
If only could be suitable for a full frame camera then well it is intresting indeed
You know I'm royally stewed over comments as to how photographers can't use their gear.
I was a Nikon fanboy .. D1x was a heap of garbage [studio use excepted, it still has the better colour and dynamic AF system] but its flash was as bad as Canon's is currently and it could not track a tortoise in sports mode and worse, it'd lock on the background if it lost whatever it was trying to focus on and it would not move again, until the photographer attempted again. This did not changer until the D3 BTW.
My 1D was a revelation as to how a camera should and could be made .. it was fantastic at AF tracking its predictive tracking was excellent [comparatively] it did have its own foibles and still does ~ but as a contemporary at the time it was unbeatable.
Now I have a 1DMKIII almost as bad as that D1x I owned, it's not too much to expect and advanced camera to be at LEAST AS GOOOD as it predecessors'.
I don't want to go back to Nikon, I don't want to be sorry I didn't when I had the chance either.

I sent my 1ds MKIII out yesterday to Irvine. I then received my third UPS label via today. This label has the camera being shipped to Newport VA. I called Canon to clarify this and they tell me ARE BAD we will have to rerouted the camera from Irvine to VA. I tell there supervisor at this point No!!! and explain I have a trip planed to Patagonia in 13 days. They are having the camera sent back to me and will provide a overnight label for me to use after my trip.

Same here Stan but I didn't notice the "ground" label until I got to the UPS shipping center. Everything I send to CPS from Arizona via ground is 5 to 6 (working) days minimum and everything I get from B & H is 5-6 (working) days so I'm now looking at 10 to 12 days (plus weekends) plus whatever time it takes them to do the fix.
I wished I would have seen the ground label before I shipped it I would have bumped it up myself. Oh well.. I guess it will be the trusty 40D for a few weeks. I sure hope this is worth it.
The nice Canon lady I talked to this morning said it had to go to Virginia or I would have sent it to Irvine too, I'm 2 days max by ground to all of southern California. She said that even Jersey (the labels they sent me yesterday) would have had to forward it to Virginia. Must be using the same shop setup as the Sub Mirror Fix.

It sounds like there will be cameras out there with enough frequent flyer points to take their owners on holiday.
Best of luck to all. Hopefully this never happens again
Quick question I'm in the process of purchasing a used 1D Mark III (which I believe is out of warranty) so if this mark III camera that I'm purchasing has not been sent for any repairs or recalls made by canon in the past years, would Canon charge me to fix the camera if they find the past recalled issues (sub-mirror fix/err99/AF problem/etc) present in my camera? Or should I just back out from the deal as it would cost me more to fix everything using out of pocket money? This is a major setback for Canon.

I'm 100% certain that Canon will fix your camera free of charge.
