p.30 #1 · Mark III-Recall again ?

That's funny that they would say they are going back to the drawing board since my MKIII is significantly better than my MKIIn now. The MKIIn's autofocus was amazing to me until I got my MKIII back after the last fix. Now my MKIII is what I have the most confidence in when shooting any kind of action. There is so much irony playing out with this autofocus stuff it's making my head spin. As a photographer I have gone from the depths of depression and self doubt to a confident state of mind in just a few weeks time. The only thing we can be sure of is change, .

A Canon rep tells you not to purchase the current available model and wait for the next announcement? Either you are making this up or that is a bogus rep.

I was at a National conference which Canon is one of the lead sponsors, along with Kodak. Also i don't think Canon allows bogus reps to have the 500D (which hasn't even hit the streets) for people to have a play with.

And
"They have gone back to the drawing board for the auto focus on the mk4, as they still haven't worked out the problems with the MK3, and don't know why it it's performing like they thought it should."

After reading this I had to check to see if I hadn't accidentally logged onto DP Review.

So was this a good friend of yours, or was he giving this information out to everyone that happened to walk by. You should have brought a thumb drive with you and asked for the source code for their firmware, and schematics and data sheets for their 1D bodies!

anyone have any recent experience with canon canada and their turn around time.

3 1/2 weeks for me.
Not to scare you, but Canon Canada is like the Bizarro-US Service Centre... where the US service centres are fast and generally knowledgeable, Canon Canada is very slow, and often the only way they can fix complex problems is with a complete replacement of the camera or lens.

any canon rep making such statements would be fired immediately if found out...i for one do not believe it and for the record my mkIII is far superior to my old mkII in every way....

"They have gone back to the drawing board for the auto focus on the mk4, as they still haven't worked out the problems with the MK3, and don't know why it it's performing like they thought it should."

So what he's saying is they went back to the drawing board for the Mk3, did something wrong, are going back to the drawing board for the Mk4 and this time -while still clueless about what went wrong with the Mk3- it'll just magically all come out allright.

Right. The only way for Canon to successfully launch a Mk4 is by fixing the Mk3 so we can trust them to have grasped the workings of their own AF system.

This rep just wants to feel important, that's all. I've seen the type, but they were never official Canon reps though.

As soon as the "MK4" is released, and tested by, say the new "Mr Nikon" - Rob Galr@ith, and gets a "there are no focus issues at all" type review, then people will have no problems shelling out money for the latest, greatest camera. I guarantee it.
(however, if the reviewers find even the tiniest flaw, things will be very different)

I had two Canon reps tell me, without me having to dig, that the "Mk3 was released from factory with an AF design flaw, and that this latest service notice is designed to fix that flaw". I was shocked to hear them actually admit this.

If Canon was happy with the Mark III series, we would have seen the IIIn by now. IV (4) in asian culture, has the equivalent connotation as the number 13, as being unlucky (means death), so it will be interesting if Canon releases a 1D mark IV.

Cheers!

There is a difference between a rep suggesting that the markIII had a design flaw which they have been working on and have fixed......and a rep telling a potential customer not to buy a markIII and wait for the next model....clearly as with many other cameras there were AF issues with some early cameras, that said look back at other past cameras and you will see all kinds of other issues and problems as well!

In my case calibration (of both body and lenses) didn't do much good. In fact, it made things only worse. After three times trying Canon offered me a replacement that works fine. Just like they offered Emile a replacement mkIII. I see a pattern here... I also think we all bought our cameras at Kamera-express...

Well, I talked to the rep on friday and they reported that it all went well were shipping my gear for a monday delivery. They didn't go into details, but upon some urging they hinted that my lenses had been off. Not the best sign, if 11 lenses (incl. a mixed bag of 9 L primes and zooms) need work. I'll await the report, but my confidence in Canon's QC took a dive.

But...I'm hoping that the tech was able to calibrate both lenses and bodies and the problem is thing of the past.

I doubt it is a calibration "thing"... but who knows, maybe they have got it right with your cam + lenses. After all, they have had some time to practice. Keep us posted.

Incidentally, Aiwa produced a walkman - the J202 Mark III which I owned. Their next revision of this model was the mark V.

My 1D III had the flange depth adjusted and a calibration but no other mention of any specific part replacement.

Didn't stop 'em releasing a 40D, 400D or 450D, did it?

It isn't a real issue, other than in some of our Canon minds...

Just some military examples, there are more of them.

Japanese Army Type 4 fighter aircraft, the Nakajima Ki-84
Japanese Army Type 4 heavy bomber aircraft, the Mitsubishi Ki-67

or

Japanese Army Type 94 reconnaissance aircraft, the Nakajima Ki-4
Japanese Army Type 2 fighter aircraft, the Nakajima Ki-44

Both military (army / navy) and manufacturer didn't avoid the number 4.

Ruy, isn't #4 related to death in the Japanese culture?
