I'm not a bagaholic, I can stop buying bags whenever I feel like it. I repeat, I'm not a bagaholic! Besides I only have five.
On a related note, I stopped by Kenmore Camera yesterday and looked at the LoewPro Fastpack 200. I didn't buy it but it sure looks interesting. But I repeat. I'm not a bagaholic.
So what is the name for this malady? - If I buy a bag, use it for a while and feel that it doesn't jive with my "style" (say, Crumpler) I feel compelled (loaded word, I know) to try a bag of a different brand.
If on the other hand, I buy a bag that totally fits my style (in my case, Domke) then I feel compelled to (you guessed it) buy a different Domke bag for a different "use." This is a no win situation.
Yup. I'm a Domke guy too...had them ever since Jim Domke sold his first ones out of his living room when he was still at the Philly Inquirer...about 30 yrs ago. Oh sure, I've had flings with LowePro and Tenba, and even a LightWare or 2, but I still come back to my F2, F3X, F5, J2 and a few of the satchels.
I guess this would be as good a place as any..........I know its not the Buy & Sale board, but we all like a good bag, and I need another one so these got to go.
These bags are looking for a new home:
Lowe pro AW Commercial a real gem I have just out grown, or a
I guess I am also a bagaholic. Always searching for the perfect bag. Always falling short in some way. But, grabbing a camera and a lens or two for the day, more often than not, I grab a Domke from the collection. Usually a 5Xb. I am a minimalist as far as what I carry. Even got them color coded: black for the 20D, Navy for the 40D, and Tan for the 10D. I'm running out of colors, don't know what I'll do when I get the 5D. Probably get another black one, I can leave it on the floor of the car, and it is invisible to passing eyes.
Another thing that comes to mind about bags, is the advertising line that says "...and it doesn't scream cameras!" They usually refer to what is called a courier bag. No they don't scream cameras, they just scream "COMPUTER!" Which is worse I think from an owner who's trying to protect his property perspective.
The wife has taken up sewing as a hobby. She has made little golf pouches that clip on a golf bag, you know, for holding little things like balls and tees. I showed her a Domke, and asked if she could sew something like that, meaning the canvas material, and line it with padding, to a design I would come up with, again, the perfect bag. She looked it over, and said yes, she could do it, if she had the new Bernina at $12,000.
That's a lot of bags. And suddenly, less than perfect is not bad.
I too am a bagoholic, but try to keep it manageable. I now own a Crumpler 4MDH and 6MDH, Lowepro Nova 5 AW (actually two of those, one for my girlfriend)...that doesn't seem bad. But what is weird is that I own THREE Timbuk2 messenger bags, a small (2 years old), medium (for work laptop), and large (owned for 10 years, good stuff). Plus I have 2 CamelBaks for mountain biking, various gear/gym/hiking bags and packs, bags for my motorcycle (saddle bags, tail bag, tank bag, dry bags for camping gear, hard case tail bag). My girlfriend says I am addicted to bags...and it is true. I love bags for some reason, but have managed to exhibit what I consider to be pretty good self control (but that's all relative! ). I'm actually looking to buy a 52 L top case for my motorcycle next....partly to safely contain my camera gear when on moto trips....shhh, don't tell my girlfriend!

I am with you man...until you got to the top case.
I have both the Tamrac MAS/SAS system with the majority or the individual pouches and the Think Tank Modular system with the 6 peices that come with the Modular system kit plus a Whip it out and a LC##(not sure which pouch it is now) plus the Tamrac Cyberpack 8 with all the Pockets for it time two. A LowePro Photo Trekker plus I have a Tamrac Pro 12(512) bag. I also have several smaller bags that hold different kits of items. I have a Giottos Tripod bag for my tripod, another tripod bag for my moonopod/litestand/litestick/umbrella and still one more bag for the rest of my litestands and grip equipment, plus two background stand kits in their own bag. I am using a couple of folding chair bags for my SkyLite kit and backgrounds. I still wanting a large roller bag and a Think Tank 360 Rotation backpack. I guess I fit as a bagaholic.
I am the Imelda Marcos of camera bags and damn proud of it. In fact, I'll be selling a few of them on the Buy and Sell forum this weekend so I can go and buy some more bags that I don't really need
The Kelty fanny pack doesn't count. It's not a padded camera bag. The light backpacks I had while in the Navy were for touring around. The camera just went with everything else. The big hip/shoulder bag was for the video camera - it was kind of big and too heavy with a couple of bodies and glass to use comfortably. So storage bags and cases don't count. The suspenders and duty belt don't count. Nor does the home-made chest strap that snaps off the neck strap and onto the backpack. It's not a bag. The little Lowepro for the Fuji ? That big bag and fanny pack were too big. Now it's too small. The daypack is a daypack. Really. The surplus $8 gas mask pouches, with shoulder straps, belts and hooks and snaps for a web belt. They were $8 - too cheap to count. The Giottos came with a bag. That doesn't count.
What was the name of that river?
Oh, the Domke cavas. Good bag. The Fuji HD-S that got left in the sun... The sticky armor that stays sticky in 100 degree weather and sub-freezing weather and sticks to the inside of a bag, to a shirt, to car, that bag? Sigh. Even washing didn't free it of the goo. (Yes, it shrank.)
I think why we have so many bags is so we can be organized. oh i forgot the Pelican 1660, all the computer bags, bags for shooting, bags for camping, camelbacks for hydration, bags for medical equipment, bags for fishing gear etc

BAGAHOLIC? I am a GEAR SLUT.
You do know the definition of a slut? Someone who has slept with at least one more person than you
I used to say that my wife still had more pairs of shoes than I had bags. A decent # of which actually cost more than most of my bags. So I was safe. Then she donated a HUGE number of shoes to charity or tossed them. Sweat broke out; I trembled; I counted.
Whew! She still had at least one more pair of shoes than I had bags. I was SAFE!
