50L

By far my most used lens on the 5D. I just sold my 35L today because I haven't used it in months.

But my opinion is to buy on the focal length, and use what works for you. Obviously what works for me is not what works for everyone who answered above me. All just personal preference.

you have FF 5D II, and 85/1.2L II, 135/2.0L, of course you need a 35/1.4L, doesn't matter what you shoot

Completely depends on your style of shooting but personally I'd go for the 35L. Pick up a 50/1.4 (Sigma or Canon) on top of it.

The Sigma 30 will vignette terribly on a 5DII, so even though the optics are excellent, it doesn't work on full frame. It does work on 1.3x bodies, though I found the MFD too limiting on my 1DII, so I'm selling mine and I picked up a 35L, which is simply stellar.

I love how no matter what lenses you ask about you get comments from people raving about both.

Half the comments say the 50L is the only lens you should own, the other half say its the 35L. Your never going to get a solid answer here.

I don't own a 50L, but the 35L is a real gem on the 5DmkII. Especially with the peripheral lighting correction, you pretty much can cut all traces of vignetting at f/1.4 effortlessly ( that is if you want to. As the vignetting does add a nice touch and pleasantness to many shots.)

The MFD of the 35L is also very handy for close up shots.

I disagree. Seems to me the 35L wins out the popularity contest every time, and usually by a significant margin.

+1 35L

A 50mm FOV is a bit too long for me

Even 35 is a bit too long, I would prefer a 30 or 28 imo

I suggest the lens on the right.

Probably because more people own it... I'm willing to bet that quite a few of the people suggesting a 35L have never even tried a 50L.

Though I will say that I also own a 24L, so if I was only going to get one prime, it might be the 35L... but the 24 & 50 are a great combo.

I would wait for the ZE21 when it is released.

having shot with both, and owning the 35L - if it was either/or, i'd go with the 35L (shock, right?). wide enough for street shooting, but compressed enough for indoor portraits.

live long and prosper. >^)

Go for 35L. It's my favorite lens. Doesn't come out from my 1Ds3.

With the 35 you can crop to the correct focal length (43mm). With the 50 you can't.

If there were a 50mm FL lens as good as the 35L I'd be all over it; but there's not, so I've learned to love the 35L until Canon copies it in 50mm length.

I use the 50L and 135L and find they work very well together. On the other hand, 50mm and 85mm are a little too close for my tastes.

If you already have the 85 and like it, I would suggest the 35mm over the 50mm. That recommendation is based strictly on focal length, not on any sort of optical performance characteristics.

Since when did 43mm become "the correct focal length"? and for what?
