Stunning shot, Andy! You're right, the planets really came into alignment with this one. I think you should send this out to the POTD sites for consideration.

Best Wishes,
Steve

That is an excellent picture, great get! I do have what's probably a stupid question for anyone on this board. Obviously he needed something like 1/2500 to get that shot but I am curious how that would equate to the proper exp. I just took my 40D outside and manually set 1/2500 at f11 iso 800 and even in fairly bright sun, some high clouds, I couldn't get any shot that was close . Aiming to the sky gave me -2 f stops. I just tried shooting my 10 yr old at a swim meet saturday and at iso 3200, f5.6

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the comment.
I will try to answer your "st-p-d question" since there hasn't been any answers yet.
Since we're shooting outdoors, we depend on natural light 100% (almost, that's if you use Better Beamers or other flash units). In order to stop the action (BIFs, etc.) the shutter speed has to be high. How high is high enough? Well that depends on many factors... amount of light, quality of light, type of lens, and reflectivity of the subject. When you get good sunlight, and you get a pretty good lens (f2.8 or f4 or even faster), you can bring the SS to around 1/1600-1/2500. I've seen some photographers on this board posting shutter speeds of 1/8000!!! You should try re-taking the photo with your 10 yr-old wearing full white clothing (like the Egret), you'll be amazed how that will affect your shutter speeds.
Despite all said above, even with very high shutter speeds, if you're not experienced with hand-holding/panning/tracking/focusing techniques, it won't be enough to freeze action. Adding a tripod will hinder you even further. With lots of practice, you'll be able to overcome these difficulties.
All I can say is practice, practice, practice. Go out there and shoot. Good luck my friend.

I actually don't know what to say. I like it when I can use one word in these situations.....

But I'm speechless....

Congratulations

You have a superior camera setup & you are a wonderful photographer -

You've been rewarded...

Lil

Thanks Lil.
I still would have liked to have a D3 and a 500mm or 600mm, then you can say that I have a superior camera setup.
Nevertheless, I'm quite content with my current setup.

That's about what I almost said quietly to myself when I saw it in my camera's LCD.

Wow, seems to be the word used by most, and rightfully so, amazing shot.

It is amazing that you were able to get enough light to stop the action, with such a fast shutter.

Good job, please explain, did you use any artificial light?

Thank you for enjoying the shot.
No, I did not use flash or any other means of artificial light.

Killer shot dude, congratulations!! This is the kind of stuff we dream of dream of.

Tim, I thought you were probably on a trip somewhere getting great photos. You're not too late, buddy. But the party had already started. This thread is still going strong after more than a week. 6,400+ views and 200+ comments for a non-group post. Has anyone who's been here longer than I, seen that before?
Thank you for the comment, Tim.
