I have a guy that makes stuff. The key was realizing that the drainpipe fitting was an interference fit for the speedlights. Now, you can make anything. ALso - you never need that much power with the small camera and the Canon eTTL wireless works so well.

Softbox wise - the lighting fashion drifts in and out. Make sure you have (or can rent) speedrings for your strobe system and then use the largest one you can get your hand on. We generally use the Octalites. Buy a lot of sandbags or hire large heavy assistants.
And - do not use a zillion lights - one is usually adequate. Also - get some super large foam core. And shoot a lot of shoots.
Agreed. I have two softboxes and love them both. My largest one is great for full body shots, large groups, etc. but it does require some sandbags to make sure it stays in place.
I'm also a big fan of bouncing light off of foamcore. That's how I do the majority of my video lighting.

Here's another DIY beauty dish I saw a while back... http://walidazami.wordpress.com/2008/12/11/do-it-yourself-diy-beauty-dish/
I'm going to build one of these sooner or later. I found a large stainless steel salad type bowl for less than a dollar at a thrift store that should be perfect.
I use the photoflex pictured in the link. It was the first softbox I purchased. It works well for head and shoulder shots but not so good for full length body shots. But it's small, light and travels well to locations.
