2nd hand 5d is not a bad idea... i just wish there was another zoom lens (24-70) that wasn't so damn expensive. I'm hoping that the new Sigma HSM 24-70 is decent. If the tamron 28-75 f/2.8 was sharper wide open it could be an option.
I have found the Tamron to be sharper than the L wide open.

Nice photos...but....I'm just wondering:
Since you are using flash, why did you shoot wide open and at ISO 800?
I thought the idea with this super-fast lens was to use it wide open without flash.
If one uses flash anyways, why not use a lower ISO for less noise & better and higher image quality?
I'm sure you have your good reasons.

just curious....
the 85L is good wide open without flash, and it is also good stopped down... without flash! In fact, the 85L is good at just about any aperture and with just about any light!
(unless you use a crop body... then it's no good! )

winman3: I found that the flash cleaned up the shots a bit, the no flash shots were a little grungy and a bit flat...I felt the flash gave the images more pop. I would post up the no flash shots but they look even worse, quite embarrassing
I think Joe Zasada makes a good point but my skill hasn't allowed me to get the full potential of the 85LII using just nature light yet
Also the higher ISO allowed more of the ambient light to bleed in, I was tempted to go ISO 1600, and I should have because many shots were ruined by motion blur at 1/125 (I was photographing very quickly, and I'm not very good at handholding) Luckily I took a lot of images to compensate

Personally, I would also consider a 2d option : For the cost of the 85/1.2, you could get a second hand 5D and (almost) a 135L. IMHO, The IQ and extra stop you get in ISO with the 5D is worth it. You would still have the 85/1.8 which is great on the 5D, and the 135L would give you the a similar DOF and perspective on the 5D then the 85L on a 40D.
This is the exact route I took when I asked a similar question several months ago. Sold my 85L and now use the 85/1.8 and 135L on my 5D. I love these lenses so much more on FF.
