Seems like I wondered how good the 28 & 35 were recently! Didn't even think about pulling up the older threads. Nice to read the old thread, thanks for reviving.

Get the 35 f/2 IS. It's an amazing lens for the price. I had one living on my 5D3's and 5D4's for years. Just sold mine today but if you are looking for a compact 35 it's a great value and performs well.
For another 50% on (UK) price you can get the Sigma 35mm 1.4 which is in another league, especially for astro. I don't think the Canon offers good value.
It seems @junglialoh is digging up old threads for some reason. Fun through to see some long-familiar names I haven't seen for a while. I.e. Yakim (RIP) and brainiac (banned, IIRC).
I owned the EF 28 2.8 and EF 35 2.0 in the early 1990s, but only shot film so I can't directly compare them to the newer designs. I do have the EF 35 2.0 IS USM and it's a wonderful lens—very sharp and flare free—but a little bulky and heavy compared to its petite predecessor.

I've owned all variants of the 35 including all L's and Sigmas...the 35/2 IS is the best value IMO when you consider size and weight in your comparison. I think the sigma is almost twice the weight and a much bigger.
A quick google search and this comparison gave the nod to the Canon 35/2:
