Actually what "sports" shooting that 5D2 AF cannot do but 1D or D3, D700 can do obviously? I just want to find a chance to test it so I can synchro to the discussion (sorry for my inexperience in DSLR and making this kind of question)

Backlit situations are problematic situations for AF systems in general- I've noticed no better results with my 1D3 so I wouldn't ding the 5d2 on that. The AF system is perfectly fine for its general audience. hopefully you're not trying to shoot sports with this because that's not what it's intended for.
True, but (and it's a huge "but" since I don't have an old 5D and new 5D to test on the exact same situation) I'm noticing that there are backlit situations similar to the ones that I shot when I had the older 5D that the newer one seems to have more trouble with. I'm curious if anyone else has noticed it.
Both my 5D and 40D's have trouble shooting in the same instances--sometimes more than others but it seems to be pretty consistent between the two. That's when FTM comes in handy, at least if possible.

Yes dalek, but the 3 was a film camera! more like comparing a horse and cart to a car.
At the end of the day you either buy it or you don`t and just carry on using your mk1 till the mk3 or 4 comes out. I`ll also buy the mk3 or 4 and have enjoyment using the mk2 in the mean time. You weren`t going to see all the things you want till the 1dsmk4 hits the shelves. At least you probably won`t have as long to wait for the 5Dmk3 as you did for the 5D2. A very good bit of advice is to grab a 1dsmk2 while they are still around for the same amount of money. a bit of extra weight but problem solved.
yeah but i was just saying what is the supposed difference between the upper-midrange and pro tier? 5dmkii and 1dsmkiii have pretty much the same sensor, so why does the 1 series AF module and quicker shutter/mirror suddely cost $4000 when the EOS 3 has it for like less than a quarter that premium) and yes the 1ds does have a bit more than the EOS3, but still. And look at the 1DMkIII and the 5dmkii and the 1dsmkiii. The 1dsmkiii costs as much as the entire cost of the PRO 1DMkIII more than the 5dmkii, so the pricing certainly has nothing to do with component cost
or again the entire EOS3 with the pro AF module and fast shutter/mirror plus the entire rest of the camera and fast motor and everything, the whole shebang costs less than the 5d to 1 series price difference. Note this is talking about relative differences I am not saying that a pro digital cam can be priced as low as a pro film camera was, the sensor does add quite a bit of cost and more development is needed.

Do you have AF point expansion on? It's not so much the AF that will cripple this camera with regards to sports, but rather the shutter lag and slow FPS. The center point of the original 5D was just fine in low light, very, very comparable to that on the 1d2/N.
This weekend I have a chance to test the side AF point performance in AI servo, but only in very good lighting, actually the side AF point work excellent without switch on the AF expansion
These photos are pointing to the head with the right end side AF point
Canon haven't made wrong on the 5D2 AF, you need to pay at least double to get the best AF in 1DsIII. But as a normal user with a certain level of requirement the 5D2 AF is more than enough. Pay for a brand new 1DsIII is not an issue for me but this 5D2 already fulfilled my competition to my friend's D700
Beside, the 21MP sensor can really show any "nano" shaking/blur of my handheld or not enough shutter speed for freezing movement in 100% view, which can never find in my previous 40D.
Will find a chance to test in low light + side AF point

Im getting the 5D2.. not mainly to shoot birds, but it would be fun to be able to do it. Still not sure if i should get a 400 5.6L to go with the camera for birding? =P
I'm hoping that in 12 months they release the 5dm2-n with improved autofocus.
That way canon can give the people what they want without needing to jump to the next upgrade too quick. Wonder how that would makes sense from a business perspective for Canon.
I don't think that significantly better AF in a 5D Mark 2 would have helped make it that great of a sports camera unless they significantly reduced the shutter lag as well.
I don't think 5D2 need to be great for sports camera, just capable is ok. No perfect in the world.
Of cos I want camera with low price like a pocket camera but it can beat 1ds3 and D3x in performance and image qaulity. User expectation can motivate the technology go. Sometime in the future a pocket DC will have this approach.
IMHO, the 5D-II focuses somewhat faster than the 5D with F2.8 lenses using the centre point. It also seems to work better in noticeably lower contrast. The peripheral points have not improved sufficiently for me to use them in my work.
On the whole, the 5D-II in a reasonable incremental improvement over the 5D. However, I do wish they would have put in a fancy, fast and reliable focus system rather than a fancy video system. But then, Canon has never listened to me before so why should the do so now :-)
