As usual, beautiful work Derek! Especially like your capture of the ice pools!
But a small part of me kind of wishes that you didn't post these - makes me REALLY regret canceling my trip to Moab, MV and Sedona over the x-mas holiday period!!
sure am sorry khurram for further ruining your ruined plans!! :-) we're not going anywhere so stop by anytime!! slide rock loves to please!!
mabidally: singh-ray variable density filter . . . expensive but incredibly versatile as well as being probably the most easy to work with, variable from 2-8 f/stops of neutral density light reduction. easy because all work (focus, composition, etc) is done with the filter 'wide open' as it were (meaning no light reduction), and then when you're ready to shoot, dial in desired amount of neutral density reduction. i just set the shutter speed to the length of time i want to experiment with, and then with everything else established (focus, comp), I dial in the filter and bring the incremental light meter to a zero reading at the pre-set shutter speed. most of the time i don't even have an idea of how much, f/stops-wise, light reduction i'm using. doesn't matter as long as i have the shutter speed i want and the light meter is at the appropriate level (generally zeroed but 'seasoned to taste' via post shot histogram reading).
may sound complicated but barry, who'd never used a variND, was purring along in, like, two minutes!!
Very beautiful series, Derek. You and Barry must have had a blast (I can see him now, sliding over those icy rocks ). I really like the golden reflections and to see it in the ice puddle is a bonus. The falls themselves are lovely in their detail. I think the closer look offered in no 2 works the best for me as this really concentrates the key elements of rock, flowing water and ice-crusted boulders.
