As usual Floris, magnificent results with extreme innovations thrown in. Well done.

Very nice shot floris, this is a particularly good star trail image. What do you think causes the gaps? Like you I have come to realise that it has nothing to do with the time between the exposures, but rather the break itself. I quickly realised that sharpening made it worse so I corrected that but I still get gaps. I was wondering if it had anything to do with the way an individal pixels tone and colour is partly worked out from its neighbours in a bayer array?

As for the short star trails. This happened to me once and i didnt understand until i realised that I had not synchronisen the whitebalances and they were all on auto.

Thanks Alex. I explained the gap issue on the second page, with an example of how with the right processing you can get rid of them (mostly). I did make sure to sync all the white balances and everything else for the raws before working with them..

I think you might be onto something with the bayer thing though, I bet that's why the colors change in the trails, as the star trails are very thin, they would be prone to getting affected by nearby pixels, so when the sky is brighter they colors might be different. That might also be another factor in the gaps.. good thinking!

Thanks for explaining your processing and capture procedure in great detail. Much appreciated. While I don't think I'll be out of the house anytime soon, I'll try it when I can
