Hi y'all,
I think an upgrade of the 35L is in the works, but my only reason for thinking this is subjective - inventory levels seem to be quite low. I think part of it is that the 5DII is fueling demand for good glass, but I also think Canon is not adding new inventory for the current model while it gets the next one ready.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Anybody know whether the current 35L works well on high density FF sensor such as 5D II or the future 1Ds IV? 5D II is on my list this year so is 35L. I can wait for the new 35 L II (let don't discuss whether it will come out or not although I believe it will this year or next). But once I buy it, I want to keep it long (10 years?). So except the new coating, weather seal, high price..., will the version II works better than verison I on high density FF sensor or some other new technologies such as microadjustment, HD video, etc?
thanks,
JJ

The beauty of the 35L is the corner sharpness wide open. You can get any lens to be sharp in the center, when stopped down, but the 35L is a great performer wide open. The 35/2 is sharper, and the 50/1.4 is just as sharp, but man just look a the FF corners of the 35L. That's what makes it such a great FF lens. I wouldn't worry about the 35L. I've used it on a 40D and 50D with very, very good results, which should indicate that the 5d2's pixel density is not an issue for this lens, as the 5d2 only has the density of the 20D and 30D.
Within the next 24 months the 35L will be upgraded. How good the upgrade will be is up in the air but all the build improvements found in the 24L II will find itself into the 35L II.
A reason why it'll be updated is because of denser camera sensors.
Based on Canon's past upgrade behavior they will only be updating Ls and introducing more EF-S lenses. Regular EF lenses (non-Ls) may never be upgraded. For reasons that maintaining two lens lines is costly enough and Canon is giving up the economy models to Sigma, Tokina, Tamron and maybe even Zeiss..
Oh and I just read through some of the other posts and someone suggested they will probably make it a 1.2 which would make sense. Then they could justify charging $2000 for it.

I wish they would release a 20mm f1.4L
For FF this would probably be way too heavy and way too expensive. That said, I wouldn't mind a 20/2 USM L. Heck, a 20/2.8 Mk II would also be nice and with the current upgrades I wouldn't be surprised to see one.
