I see most here are going for a B & W conversion. Lotsa good shots this week. Instead, I thought to take a photo of my of a classical Japanese Go set. It's an extraordinarily difficult game - in many ways more challenging than Chess - played with these black and white pieces.

Hi Endre,

A very interesting idea for the assignment. You lighting is terrific as usual and I love the textures that you have captured in the wood. I also like your choice of a relatively wide angle for this shot. It is terrific overall.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Beautiful idea Endre. I agree with what's already said. My only additional thought is to ask if you considered trying it with the black pieces in the foreground. Texture in the dark pieces would hold interest, and the white pieces would naturally draw the eye diagonally toward the rear. I dunno, just a thought.

Fabulous pic. The combination and contradiction of colours, light and shadow and shapes makes it an extraordinary pic but that is the ordinary with you.... If I could, I'd go green with envy but as it is not permitted this week I am black and white with envy.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Hi Strad

That's a stunning shot, I love it. The lighting is fabulous.

I was hoping to get a luxury chess set with French Revolutionary characters for Xmas...but we can't find anywhere here in the UK that still sells the figures....maybe I will have to try and get one of these instead...

Can't believe I have missed black and white week! - had the builders in re-fitting a cloakroom, and my spare time has been spent supervising workmen... How you come up which such high standard shots every week says a lot about your talent...

take care
Sue

You’ve created a great color photograph that’s perfect for this week’s Black and White assignment, Endre.
I like the perspective and smooth lighting that gives it a wonderful three-dimensional effect.
My favorite this week!

An outstanding entry as usual. I am happy to see some colour amongst all the B&W conversions. I tried to do it too, but the colour in my image was distracting. You've certainly succeeded. Excellent lighting as well. I do wonder whether a tighter crop might be even more effective, but you've probably already weighed that option.

All the best,
Rich

Nice!
What neat wooden bowls. I like the arrangement of the elements, and the spot-light effect is great!

Thank you, Carolyn. I'm delighted that you like it. I don't play it very well. I know someone who takes weekly telephone lessons with a master Go player. I wish I had that kind of spare time and money.

All best wishes,

Endre

Thanks, Jess, my friend! I'm always glad when you like one of my shots. I did try it the other way around but somehow the setup didn't work out quite the same, so I stuck with this one.

Fond regards,

Endre

You're too kind, Yakim, my friend! Your shot this week is a real contender so don't turn too black and white.

All best wishes,

Endre

Thank you, Sue, my dear friend. I am honored by your high praise. It always means a lot when a photo of mine elicits a comment from you.

Go is a great game - easy to learn the basics and incredibly difficult to master. I prefer chess only because I learned it when I was a kid. I tried to find you a French Revolution chess set online but, sadly, no luck.

I don't know if you remember but you won the very first WA I entered several years ago. I took 3rd. You had won the WA the week before, too. So, your photography has always been particularly inspiring to me.

Fond regards,

Endre

PS Your specialty is B & W. That you missed this one is amazing!

Thanks so much, John, my friend! I'm always happy when you like a shot of mine so much. ISince I frequently do B & W conversions of my shots, i didn't think I'd find that much challenge in simply taking a pretty shot and then converting it. After all, there is a whole FM forum devoted to B& W. We'll see if my thinking proves helpful.

Fond regards,

Endre
