I'm just learning my Canon 50L, but I like it. It took 3 tries to get a copy I like. First two had terrible backfocus throughout. This third one came directly from Canon HQ after they failed to calibrate the previous copy. It does have the infamous focus shift, but at it's worst, it's about 3/8" at f2.8 at about 2'. The upside is pretty amazing bokeh, IMHO.
An aside, but those might be the coolest looking birds I've ever seen. They look like that guy from The Cure.
I was told they are called polish (something) chickens. They come in some varieties, with a word to replace "something". Maybe annother FM'er can help us out here...
Sorry to interrupt in the middle of the polish chicken phase. The left is the L, that’s right.
I see I mentioned the 1.8 first but it came second in the picture. It’s a bit like those movie poster where they place the names so you have to know which one is Danny DeVito and which one is Nicole Kidman in order not to go wrong.
No, seriously, I wouldn’t stake my house either on something like this. A slight difference in focus could perhaps turn the tables, who knows.
Nevertheless, I think I got the focus very similar in this case and that this comparison confirms my general experience from the two lenses.

I plugged Polish Chicken into Google, and they certainly look similar, if not the same. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to have to see if I can find some of these myself.
