John, what I feel this needs is a re-shoot of just the square dowel in the hole, not only more wood chips (agreed) but the sides splintered and curled out and the top of the square dowel flattened and splintered. So much identifiable drama that there would be no need to show the sledgehammer as an explanation.
A new game I play is to find your shot among the entries. I knew immediately that this was yours. You always manage to convey a concept in a very simple manner, with excellent lighting. It is fun to know I've learned your style well enough to identify your images correctly at a glance. Nicely done...
