p.2 #1 · 50D or New Lens? Hmm...

I have the 24-105. I recently upgraded from the 20D to the 50D.
I would plan on both the lens and body upgrade. I have never used the 40D but I think its the way to go in terms of quality, price point. 50D is still new, and even though the price dropped quickly from 1399 (ouch, what I paid) to 1199, I'm not sure that it is worth the extra over the well-received 40D. And either will be a significant upgrade from the 10D.
The 24-105 is my walk-about, replacing my 28-135 and far superior. It is probably a two step up jump from your current zoom. Unfortunately, its still pricey. But probably worth waiting for.
Hope this helps.
Scott

I have a 40D and a 50D -- if I were to sell one, it would be the 50D.

I just picked up a used 5D... that is also a good solution, although it *feels* like traveling back in time next to a 40D or 50D. I can't speak on IQ because I just got it.

I would recommend a 17-55 IS over the 24-105... I have both.

I sold a 24-85 for around $200 so remember that you have that money to play with, too.

Good luck with your quest, these problems are fun to deal with!

The 5D is pretty damn sweet in terms of IQ. You'll probably be unloading the 50D, since you just bought the 5D.

I need to keep 3 bodies at this point... two shooters (wife) and a backup.

I didn't say you didn't have to have 3 bodies...just saying you'll sell the 50D. Trust me, 5D files are just special. You'll be selling the 50D to buy another 5d

10D? What's that?

Jokes aside, L glass seldom disappoints, especially L primes, and that's the way to go if you don't need the high iso capabilities of the newer bodies. AF speed and accuracy are likely to improve as well with the USM lenses.

I would go with a new body, in order of preference:

used 5D -- orders of magnitude improvement over the 10D

40D -- best bargain on the market today

50D -- latest and greatest crop camera

+1 to this

Also, on a 5D, from what you have said, your 70-200 f4L might see more use since the range will feel quite different on full frame.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and opinions.

I am actually thinking more seriously about the glass because no matter what I do re: the body, I can still use the good glass. My 70-200 f/4 L produces visibly sharp, contrasty pictures; the thought of that quality in my walkaround lens is exciting. The range of the 24-105 is a little broader than my 24-85, so I think I'll be plenty happy with that.

Regards

Agreed!

I'll get the 24-105L first. Your limit is currently the 24-85. Since you use the 24-85 most and find it lacking image wise, the 24-105L will give you much greater joy than any new camera.

why not just gettting a 40d with couple hundreds dollar cheaper than 50D? investing on lens is always better than on camera body, i think.

glass now, body later
you might prefer the 24/70 to the 24/105
also the Tammy might fit the bill, it can be a bit noisy, but great for the $$

That is what I would do

40D + 24-70L (given you have 70-200)
