Uh, I wasn't trying to sell anyone on anything. I don't have to justify why I do what I do to anyone. My reason is good enough for me - if it isn't for you, tough. I re-read both of my posts and I don't see where I was trying to convince you of anything. I'm very happy that you make your living this way and that you have your own thoughts and beliefs. Thanks, though, for pointing out the obvious to me. I mean, gee, I wouldn't have known that otherwise.
The less than enthusiastic response certainly has me re-thinking my decision. I don't necessarily want to learn a new system or give up what I have for an unknown. Lke I said at the end of my other post - I'm going to be sleeping on this one again....Show more →The D300 is a great camera and Nikon did their homework before bringing it to market. Like others have stated, the D700 is nice as well however I like the 1.5 crop as I really can't justify the cost of the super tele's required. I have the Sigma 10-20, Nikon 24-70 2.8 and the Nikon 70-200 2.8. If currently fills all my photographic needs and I have no hesitation at all in recomending it to others.
I really can't comment on the Canon/Nikon thing - I chose Nikon back when the D70 was new just because it felt better in my hands than the the Canon. I have shot with a friends 1d Mk3 and while it is a great camera, I sure missed the "feel" of my Nikon. My eyes certainly are not what they used to be either and going to the D300 was such a joy, it was amazing.
Buy whatever you like, enjoy whatever you buy. I'm sure you'll be very happy with a D300 and the lens choice you posted.
That was one of the other things - the 'feel' of the D300. I have huge hands and it just fits nicely. I won't lie, I like the idea of moving to Nikon as well. The 14-24 has no equal I've seen. I'm really excited about that. Am I excited about no 400mm? No and it has me rethinking the whole thing - at least till after migratory bird season.

I've had my D300 for several months now, and I absolutely love it.
I'm not knowledgable with Canon, so I can't help but wonder if they make a camera with a comparable LCD so you don't have to jump ship and sell your glass.
I know you'll never recoup your loss on lenses, so I could never consider dumping my Nikon for Canon.
Anyway, good luck with your choice, I enjoy shooting my Nikon, and am about to leave to shoot my son's hockey game.

yes they do that would be the 50d and after just sending mine back to b and h.
i can say the upgrades were great but the iq was a step down from the 40d for my shooting, my eyes and my prints which i do mainly is print. on a pixel level the 50d doesn't get it. too much post work to get it to 40d for me. as the 40d retains more shadow detail than 50d but that screen is to die for.
i am also looking at d300 70-200vr and i don't know what to replace my 17-55is 2.8.
too old and too much coffee and cigs makes me need is/vr across the board. and love the 2.8.... maybe i will make do without the vr on nikons 17-55.
i doubt i would be happy with the 16-85vr too slow for what i need.
wish i had looked at d300 before but i came from rebelxt, 20d,30d anow 40d so what else was to do.
I have shot with both the D300 and 50D cameras, and for most things I think the D300 is the better camera. Better built, smarter features and overall a very nice camera.
I had the use of a D300 for a weekend coming off using my D70. It was great that most things were similar and the extra buttons to circumvent going through the menus were a boon. The LCD screen, just wow.
I could not believe how simple it was for me to get some decent astro shots of the milky way using ISO 1600 and 3200. I was just mucking around and I had good results!
The most amazing thing to me though, was how well the camera metered a scene. This has been one of the strong suits of the D70 IMHO and I was really surprised at just how good the D300 was. Looking through the viewfinder of my D70 I was usually pretty good at judging what needed exposure compensation and was doing the same thing with the D300 only to find the camera was not exposing as I thought it was. I left it alone and could not believe how well it was hitting the mark.
The 30D and 40D are awesome cameras but if you aren’t happy with the LCD’s fair enough. Going back to peering at the back of my D70 made me remember just how far cameras have come.
Having the D300 for the weekend didn’t mean I got better shots than what I normally get. It just meant I can crop more.
I have the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 and it's a great lens, but there is a lot of praise going on right now for the Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8. I may try to sell my 17-55mm because it is a DX lens and the 28-70 is not.
Slow down on the coffee and cigs, I have a good friend and hockey coach to my son that doesn't take care of himself and just went into the hosptial on Sunday for a stroke. Take care of yourself so you can enjoy whatever route you take for a long time.

I agree, I had A 50D, And I now have A D300, And the D300 is a much better value and feature packed camera!
I've finally started the change. D300, 17-55 and 70-200/2.8VR, plus a 105/2.8 macro to start. SB900 for light. Sound like a decent starting kit?
Yes, I'll miss my 100-400 for sure. But only for a little while. There is the Siggy 150-500, after all!
