I had to shorten the lever on my Vivitar 28/2.0 with K-mount when using it on my 40D. Maybe it's an exception, but I can't really imagine that the lenght of the lever would be very different on different (3rd party) lenses...
I could mount the lens without lever mod, but when mounted the aperture would close to a point somewhere between 3.5 and 4.0. Impossible to open it further because the lever was hitting the top of the mirror box.

I've seen some third party lenses with really long aperture control levers, in comparison with the OEM Pentax lenses, so what you're saying makes good sense to me. One in particular that I can remember is the Vivitar Series 1 70-210/3.5 zoom made by Kino (62mm filter thread); nice lens. I just haven't tried to use one of them on my current Canon gear. Most of my Pentax K gear was sold off in 2004 and 2005, as I was building up my EOS inventory.
