Often times when people talk about serial numbers, either on this board or on the B&S, they hide the last few digits of the serial number. Why is this? It's not a credit card or a social security number. What are people trying to protect against?
This is because people or the owner is trying to protect themselves from thieves... also serial numbers are tied to the dealer you got it, if you bought with credit card it's tied to that too[ & guess what your card is tied to your SSN ]... you register it to Canon voila you have all your personal Data--- home address, phone etc etc... dangling all over the place
So be carefull...your camera's S/N is for you alone.
I had a girl ask me the other night "what's that dot on your thing?"...
So I told her..."that's not a dot baby - that's a tattoo...and when I get excited, you can see that it's actually my registered Canon serial number..." :-)

huh? How does one look up someone's credit card and personal data off of a serial number?
If this is actually the case, there goes the used camera gear market. Don't ever sell any of your gear. If someone obtains your gear, you're now at risk to basically have your identity stolen.
On the Effectiveness of Aluminium Foil Helmets:
An Empirical Study

Abstract
Among a fringe community of paranoids, aluminum helmets serve as the protective measure of choice against invasive radio signals. We investigate the efficacy of three aluminum helmet designs on a sample group of four individuals. Using a $250,000 network analyser, we find that although on average all helmets attenuate invasive radio frequencies in either directions (either emanating from an outside source, or emanating from the cranium of the subject), certain frequencies are in fact greatly amplified. These amplified frequencies coincide with radio bands reserved for government use according to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Statistical evidence suggests the use of helmets may in fact enhance the government's invasive abilities. We speculate that the government may in fact have started the helmet craze for this reason.
KingBob,
Ali Rahimi (et al) wrote the above abstract - not me. If he spells it differently than you do...I guess it just goes to show that MIT will let in anybody these days.
You blokes call bitumen "bitchumen"...what's the diff?
And even if it is made out of alumnium...I'm still gonna call it tin foil, cause that's how granny learned me :-)

Bro... the internet have a lot of genius people... some do computer hacks or network security breach for living.
as for you --- you are free to advertise your camera's S/N together with your pics.. have fun

Might as well cover your license plate while you're at it. It's linked to your personal information as well.
Don't use a credit card either or hand it to a waiter at restaurants. They can easily copy it in the back, security code and all.
Don't ever touch anything because your fingerprints can be duplicated. Don't look at anything because your retinas can be scanned and duplicated.
Don't shed any hair because your DNA can be obtained.
I suppose the line between legitimate safety and fear-based paranoia isn't exactly cut and dry.
That's true too!.... that's the reason why you see... almost all CAR enthusiast's sites they erase their plate numbers on their photos... go visit them.
Paranoia or not it's up to you... I am just telling you the reasons why.
Maybe your workstation right now is being compromised by a sixth grade hacker.--you'll never know.
My point is don't give these people any ideas\anything that is tied to your personal information.
Like I said... you can post your Car's license plate on the internet...--- let's see.
Check your pay-check... you'll see half of your SSN is being crossed out, check your credit bills [ almost all them do ] you'll see your card's account number is also crossed out too.
Trying googling your own name... you'll be amazed how many entries you'll have.
Identity Theft is real...
Legit safety? you are free to do anything like everyone else.
