I put my 5D and 30D in for a sensor clean today and the guy rings me up an hour later to say that both of my cameras do not work. He had just finished fixing a Cosina lens and thought he would test it on my 5D. He puts the lens on and there is no power in the camera (I had just installed a freshly charged battery into it this morning). He is like "that is strange this camera was only coming in for a clean"...so he tries it on my 30D to see if it will work and presto my 30D is doing the same thing as my 5D. He then rings up Canon to see if there has ever been an issue like this before and they say that should not happen and no they have never heard of this before either. So he thinks the lens has somehow killed the ac/dc couplers! Has this happened to anyone else? He has since sent them off to Canon ASAP to get them looked at. Hmmm I hope my 5D comes back next week sometime as I have a big job to complete.
1. Clean your own sensors.
2. Only use reputable service (preferably the manufacturer even though it may cost more.
3. Always include a written statement with any camera you send for service. It should state the status of the camera (working properly, AF broken, etc) and the reason you are sending it.
4. Never send all your cameras at one time. You always need a camera in hand if you expect to complete the job.
My cameras were sitting on his desk so he thought he would just quickly check. I bet he never does that again. He has offered to replace my 30D with a near new one that he has. But I do not really care too much about that one as I have my 20D back-up but the 5D on the other hand...
Tell them that the cameras have so much sentimental value to you that the only way you will be satisfied would be replacement 50D and 5D mkII cameras
I would check the guys pipe and see what he was smoking, that was a really dumb thing to try. Sensor cleaning is not a hard thing to do and it is a lot cheaper in the long run, or send your cameras to a certified Canon site.
I hope your cameras come back ok.
hold on...according to your profile, you don't even own a cosina lens -
why on earth did he use your camera as an experimental device for fixed lenses in his business?
you might try to take some legal action if that's the case
wow. that sucks, I'm sorry. I'm with the others, why the hell would anyone put a different lense on a camera to "try it out", thats just stupid, no matter how long he had with Canon. Hope you get them both back or replaced, good luck.
Isn't this what insurance is for? His, not yours. If yours aren't repairable and you accept other used models in replacement, I would also ask for an extended service warrenty from him on those. As for the big job you need them for, if you don't have suitable replacements by then, have him or his insurance cover the rentals. Get it in writing before renting, but don't wait too long to order the rental.
A hard lesson learned, but if he's the pro you trust, I would think he has.
I would really kick up about it. He has damaged your bodies by doing this. I can sort of understand that he tried the lens on a body that was close by (shame it was your 5D) but to then stick it on another what was he thinking. Thats like sticking your hand in a basket of snakes and getting bit then sticking your hand back in to get the snake that bit you.
If you cams come back repaird then I would hope that HE will stand for a years warranty on both so that if anything goes wrong he gets them fixed again or replaces them. If they are not fixed then I think he should get you 2 new bodies.
The repairer has offered me a near new 30D to replace mine but it still does not help in tha fact I need my 5 for the following week. Damn that 5D MKII not being available yet would have been a good excuse to the wife!

read what he wrote again, he never said he had a Cosina lens. And 'legal" action is what children do. The guy made a mistake, and is now fixing his mistake. Whats wrong with that? Why is everybody in America so sue-happy?
I am pretty cool about it. Everybody screws up now and then. As long as my camera comes back in the same condition as when I dropped it off then I will be happy.
