OK, now that the Canon 5DmkII is out, when do we get the comparison with the Sony a900 that is screaming to be made?
I was ready to dump everything an buy into an a900 and ZA lenses, but now I'm not so sure. I'd really like to see a competent comparative shakeout done -- competent being the operative word, but I'm not sure it will come. Maybe this is something for diglloyd.com to consider doing.
Most people will immediately dump all over the HD video feature. The initial thought of this made me roll my eyes, but thinking about shooting HD video with all my lenses... hmmm. Not as a work tool per se, but for fun?
The HD video 'feature' looks interesting but will it be a fully functioning video capture solution that can compete with dedicated HD video cameras or just an add on gimick?

Yes, I can take videos of my dog doing tricks! Never had much use for video cameras before, but I guess I might use it a couple of times. They better come out with super high capacity CF cards to handle the video storage requirements.

I don't think we will see a direct comparison before these two cameras are available.
This is a somewhat difficult choice for me as I just sold my 5D and the 5DII is not expected until the end of November while I think the A900 will show up at the end of this month. IQ wise, Canon is claiming the 5DII replacement will exceed even the 1DsIII which itself might be slightly ahead the A900. The thing is, I only need low ISO/high resolution so the super duper low light performance of the 5DII is not a huge draw for me, nor is the video feature. Removing these benefits, the A900 seems to offer a much stronger basic camera feature set such as that huge, 100% viewfinder and increased FPS. When Adobe releases an update of ACR, I think we will get a better idea of what the A900 files offer and I bet this happens in the next week or so. It is interesting to me that Canon does not appear to have been too worried about competition based on the 5DII feature set upgrade or lack thereof. Image quality should be there though.

It is limited to something like 29 minutes so I don't think it will be a direct replacement for a dedicated Video camera. Seems like if one used it often, it might result in extra heat build up on the sensor but what do I know. Anyone have any ideas on this or its impact.

i think its definitely use the right tools for the right job. personally, i'd just ignore the video camera function. heck, i'd be even happier if canon removed it and i could pay less for the camera.
It's curious of Canon claiming the IQ will be better than the more expensive 1DsIII - will we see a 1DsIIIn soon then to redress the balance? I think 'most' users will be only interested in the resolution and IQ and if these key features can be had with a much , much cheaper body it would seem like a commercialy insane move by Canon.
Rumor is PMA in February will bring a super high, 30+ MP 1DsIII replacement.

Apparently, from Canon's description, it is a new chip (implying it is not the chip from the 1DsMkIII) so it might indeed surpass the 1DsMkIII in IQ, or at least high ISO performance.
Canon's text says, "The EOS 5D Mark II’s newly designed full frame 21.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor features ISO sensitivity from 100-6400, expandable to 50, 12,800 and 25,600. Large 6.4µm2 pixels have been redesigned to capture more light and yield a better signal to noise ratio to ensure lower noise images throughout the ISO range."
Looks like a much better option for Alt Lens types than the A900, since you retain the wide adaptability of EF mount rather than being locked into Sonolta lenses and M42 with the A900.
Now I wonder when the 24MP D700 variant will show up?
I think you are correct. The saving grace is of course those Zeiss AF, fully compatible Sony lenses are not too shabby nor are some of the older Minolta AF lenses, though they do not seem to be that abundant on the used market for some reason.

Looks like the specs over at DPReview state 12 minutes/4GB max for HD movie mode if anyone was interested.

That's the first thing I thought too.
As I've said before, Sony needs to sell that body CHEAP to tempt Canikon users away or the platform will just stagnate. Just matching the price won't cut it. Now that I've seen the price of the Canon 5D2, I think the Sony needs to be $1500 not $3K! Are they dreaming?
I expect the 5D2 to have the edge over the Sony in IQ, as Canon are already claiming that the 5D2 offers the best IQ of any body they make, and I think the Sony was just under the 1Ds2 in a comparison I saw recently.
