It's a legit shop, I've gone there numerous times on my lunch break and have purchased lenses from them before. It's a real deal camera store, not one of the warehouse bait and switch places in Brooklyn or Naroibi
But whatever, it's probably best if you go in person since there are alot of us here from NYC. It's on 51st and Lexington - inbetween Sports Authority (I think) and Jamba Juice. Ask for Reggie, but anyone there should be able to assist.
Nice folks! All the bodies are gone - I got one of the last kits - I think there's 1 or 2 left. Means I'll have to sell the lens since I already have one but.... it's that or wait until Feb or March which is what a lot of the sellers are quoting for the "second wave".

That's doubtful. It could be somewhat better simply because it's newer. You know, technology moves on.
But then, the 1Ds mkIV could be better still. After all, the mkIII is now old news, and is on the way out.

Well I just called them up and ordered a body only. They had 2 left, well, 1 now. But still have the 24-105 kits as well. Shipping tomorrow so should have it Wednesday. Figure since I work in the city if they don't deliver I can pay them a visit. ;-p
Man that was quick - I had to settle for a kit. Soooo - if they don't deliver what do you charge for a "visit"?
Seriously tho - I'm pretty good at picking out shysters and the folks there sounded pretty reliable and upfront.

Skipping sales tax is essentially illegal in many states, and yes I know most people do it. However, some states have a formula for mail order and internet sales tax based upon your gross adjusted income that you use when filing your state tax returns. This is typically known as a state Use Tax. Many times it works out considerably less than the actual sales tax.
Of course I'd like to live in a state that has relatively low property tax and no state income tax like Texas.
There is no free lunch and there is no tax-free state. Yes it is true that Texas has no state personal income tax. However, "low property tax" may be a judgement call. Property taxes vary from place to place, with everyone wanting a piece of your property in Texas. Where I live, I pay these property taxes: City of Houston, Houston Independent School District, Harris County, Harris County Flood Control District, Port of Houston Authority, Harris County Hospital District, Harris County Dept. Education, Houston Community College System. In total, they add up to 2% of the appraised value of my house. The Harris County Appraisal District reappraises both residential and commercial properties every year. So take the market value of your house X 2%, and that's what I get to pay in property taxes--whether I have any income or not. Sales tax here in Houston is 8.25%.
In Texas, if you buy out of state tax free, you are obligated to pay Use Tax. Use Tax is paid only to the state, so it is "only" 4.5%. And I am certain that at least 95% of Texas citizens who make purchases over the Internet, voluntarily report and pay Use Tax.
There is another reason to buy locally, though. The Houston metropolitan area is about 3 million people (plus about half a million illegals, but that's another rant). We have exactly two camera stores. It would be a shame if we had only one. And and really sad if we had none.
It may be night and day if and when Nikon launches their MX/MF sensor/body. If Leica can do it, Nikon can too, as they have been making MF lenses for a long time. So it's just a matter of time before we see it happen. I'd like to see how Canon is going to respond to that.

In NYC, a company must have an "entity" doing business in the city in order to collect tax on out of state sales. Generally, the state doesn't collect taxes on out of state sales if they have no offices in the state.
So we can do without paying any taxes on internet sales from companies that have no "brick and mortar" operations here, or back office personnel, or warehouses.

I don't see much of a market.
The estimate for medium format digital cameras right now is a total of about 6,000 to 7,000 bodies a year.
While Leica might feel it has a decent chance to sell a $20,000 body, and multi thousand dollar lenses there, why would Canon and Nikon be interested?

Same here in Dallas/Fort Worth area. 8.25% sales tax and our property taxes are NOT low (at least $8000+ per year doesn't seem low to me).
I ordered mine from Keeble and Shuchat in Palo Alto on the day of the announcement back in September. They called me on Friday, when I was out of town, to let me know it was in. I picked it up yesterday. They had received 18 cameras. Must say that I'm extreeemly(!) happy even though I haven't uploaded a single image to the computer yet. Of course, this is replacing my 300D...
Just picked up my 5D II from Nelson's San Diego today!!!!..very nice local store, fare size store, 2 stores...LaJolla and Downtown San Diego. They got their first shipment today, 2 bodies!!! Only 2 Kits=00000?
I have given up looking at samples and reading reviews of them at other sites such as DPR. Too many mixed reviews/comments/flaming out there as normal after a new release. I have seen some really nice high ISO RAW samples especially at DPR and some just so-so there and elsewhere.
Since this is my FF upgrade from my 1Ds, I'm sure I will be happy.
Got my tracking # today, make my own opinion on Wednesday I think it is correct that small stores got them first, that is where I got mine.

As this is the Master 5D mkII thread, I don't see why that should be done.
What we should have had was a " Let's discuss the trivia of when I'm getting mine" thread, as this is what it's deteriorating into.
That deterioration is exactly why this thread should be unpinned and left to drift off. Same as was done with the 24 II thread once that lens shipped. However, perhaps there should be a shipping status thread to collect the "I received mine from xxx" or "yyy is shipping one ...." messages.

Absolutely let it drift. Time for the "Hands On" thread

Well, I do think that there should be a thread exclusively for those obsessed about exact shipping dates, so that we can get on with discussing the 5D mkII in broader industry terms, as well as the coming reviews and such.
How that would happen, I don't know. But I hope the "I haven't got mine yet" posts should go away shortly..

Actually, yes! Let's get the discussion going about how the camera handles. Questions about the auto focus, exposure. Any forward or backfocus issues, etc. How is Canon doing vs Nikon with the new cameras. Where does Sony fit into the sales picture, and other questions. That's much more interesting than "I got a date, but they haven't called me yet".
