Well I'm very happy to be proven wrong and if anything it was more of a provocation to get some results on this topic. Thanks.
The base ISO chroma noise wasn't offering much encouragement in this area (the 1ds3 certainly outperforms it there).
Probably the most significant camera release in a long time.
well i'm not sure what to say anymore doesn't look worse on this one guys tests but only barely looks better for noise.
first read noise is not the total sum of noise so the nearly twice as good read noise may not at all mean a full stop better
second he took the shots under direct sun from a window so maybe his high iso shots even the -EC3 part are not really that low light and the shot noise is totally dominating over the read noise, maybe a shot in a dark hall would give the 5dmkii say a 1/2 stop ineatd of what looks like maybe 1/8 stop??
The problem is that the shots we're seeing posted here, and over the web are, for the most part, not being done under controlled conditions, with comparisons between cameras.
I'm surprised we haven't seen at least one basic review by some site as yet, now that the camera is available. It's hard to believe that they haven't had a sample for some time.
But, when we do see something from somewhere reliable, I hope all of this argument and supposition will be cleared up.
I'm just not thinking what I'm seeing so far is reliable enough.
Well guys, it's official, the D3x will be shipping in a few weeks.
Guess the price:
$7999.99 in the US!
Canadians will be happy to see that the price there will be CDN $9449.95, so they can stop complaining about Canon's pricing differences.
Now we can stop also complaining the 1Ds is overpriced.
Interestingly, the specs look more like Sony's than Nikons. up to 1600 ISO, with special settings to 6400. 5 FPS at 24.4 MP, with 7 at 10 MP (that seems low).
Is it me, or does that "self cleaning sensor" seem more like a gimmick than a real option? Almost every sample I've seen on the canon website has a fair amount of dust on it.

It's only come in useful for me once. The other times I had to blow the dust out myself.

In my experience it works well on the 40D. I have to clean the 20D and 30D a lot more often.

I'd say it's just a case of mitigation rather than elimination. Full-Frame sensors are dust magnets - I suspect the sensor cleaning just means that the attract less dust, not that they don't attract dust at all.
Thanks, I have the 5d and have no experience with those self-cleaning sensors. My Visible Dust tool worked well for the first few passes, now it is nothing but a cheap piece of junk that comes apart every time I spin it. Hopefully I won't have to use it as much with the 5dII.
Another question. I saw some of the earlier shots from the 5dII on here, but couldn't post (because I lost my password!), but there seems to be some significant banding in the darker areas of photos, like in the one of the building on the docks. I really hope this is an issue due to post processing and not a flaw in the camera or firmware.

Greg - check out this test .... scroll down to Post #17 for a more accurate comparison against the 1Ds Mk III. All that I want from the 5D II is a 1Ds III image quality for half the price .... and it does look like we are getting it!

Anyone call Adorama or B&H over the weekend to find out if they got their shipment?? My local store (Penn Camera) still has not received any.
Just called Adorama (I'm in the first allocation), and they have not received their shipment yet.
I will NEVER buy another camera without a self-cleaning sensor. I don't expect any dust removal system to be foolproof but if it works 75% of the time (and it does) I am real happy .... as you can't be cleaning your sensor when you are shooting on the dunes in Death Valley, or anywhere else where dust prevails.
