I was at the Photo plus expo in NY last week and got to play around with the 5d2. The canon reps would not allow anyone to put a media card in it, saying it was strictly a pre production model. By saying that, I would hope they are tweaking the specs up. The reps said, even they do not know the quality and specs of video. I had asked them if a still frame could be pulled out of the video footage and how big the file would be. He answered by saying it may be around 2 megs....Show more →
The images from a 1920x1080 pixel frame will be approx 2 megapixels (simple math), perhaps that is what he meant, which in the scheme of things isn't news.
I should point out that he did NOT say that the "RAW files are virtually indistinguishable". The actual statement on noise in the RAW files is as follows:
"Let me put it to you this way: Using Canon's DPP 3.5.1 raw conversion software with all image quality settings equalized, noise levels will be almost the same for both cameras, with a slight advantage to the 5D Mark II because of the improvements in its CMOS sensor compared to the 1Ds Mark III. YMMV with other converters." ...Show more →

I did the same last year for a mkIII, was cameraless for too long
Ugh, that's where I'm at. Sold my 5D the week the 5D2 was announced. Probably not a bad idea, got over $1700 for it, but I'm gettin' restless with no camera now!
To bide my time, I threw together this 5D site to gather all links I could find into one place.
One thing for sure, I'll have the manual embedded in my memory by the time the camera shows up!

A fect is a fact, no 'given' about it.
If so, Canon sure fooled everyone who spent $8000 just about less than 2 years ago.
Errr, how? Would the smart people have waited until now for a camera that STILL isn't out? And what did they do in the meantime? Take photos with their stack of 80 $100 bills they hadn't spent?
Two years ago is an eternity. How many frames have been shot since then?
Besides which, the 1-series is a different beast indeed - it's most certainly not just about image quality.

nice web site I like it. Save me the time of reading forums
I could be absolutely wrong, but I believe Canon is very fond of the huge profit to be had in the 8.000 dolars Ds series, so the next Ds will probably be around 30MP or more, with several other features, as to allow them the possibility to, once more, charge 8000$ for a camera.
If it's the biggest and absolutely the best, they can get away with it.
And they will.
Like they have been for a long time.
This is like saying that the early adopters of the computer, cell phone, external hard drives and high-capacity memory cards, etc are all suckers. If you can afford it, there is aboslutely nothing wrong in getting a two-year head start over the peasants .... of which, I am one!

Maybe. It depends on Nikon. If they do come out with a more competitive camera to the 1Ds series, what will they charge for that? Would they retire the D3 in favor of that, and charge about the same? Or will they keep the D3, and charge more for the D3X, D4, or whatever they call it?
If so, what will they charge? $6,000, $7,000, more?
the thing people forget is that pcs have to upgrade regularly to keep up with our needs, ie as we require more space to store an ever increasing demand for digital data. also more powerfull programmes require faster chips.
Photography on the other hand can ony go so far. the human eye is only so good so whats the point in a 100 mpx 100fps iso 3000000 camera. are we all going to be cropping to 500% or printing 20ft x 20ft. we have already surpassed alot of film cameras.
people have been buying prints from much more inferior cameras for years mainly for their asthetic qualities not for the pixel perfection qualities.
