Exactly. And I have absolutely no problem with this. It's win-win for everybody.

Canon pre-announces these items to try to keep you from buying Nikon. If Canon hadn't announced the 5D yet, you would have given up all hope on the Canon platform and migrated to Nikon.
Now Canon has bought several months of extra time to get their product to market. For free.

Not sure on Contrast, but there's phase and face detect AF.
You have both contrast detect (you pick with the joystick the rectangle where it should focus), and face detect, where the rectangle is positioned automatically. The face detect worked actually remarkably well when I tried it, even in bad light. The catch is however - for both methods - that's it's not progressive AF, as in, unlike in a camcorder, it's not tracking. You need to press/hold the AF-ON button to get it to focus where the focusing rectangle is, and at least when I tried it, it caused video stutter.
So for all intents and purposes it's MF, and the focus methods are there only to help you with acquiring initial focus.
100 pages of rumours before the camera was announced and another 114 pages of banter since, all before a single camera has shipped! It's going to be a blood bath if this camera doesn't deliver the goods!
Canon should have announced the camera closer to its available date.
Canon is consistently better in that respect than nearly any other manufacturer. Canon always has a new camera on the shelf within 90 days of announcement--usually within 60 days.
Other manufacturers tend to announce new cameras from 90 days to a year or more before delivery...and frequently announcements turn into vaporware (like the Pentax medium format digital camera).

Given the current field of choice, why would I not be better off buying a 5D Mark II (when available) and a Mark III instead of a IDs Mark III. Seems that I would get the best of all worlds? I may have to act before next spring when I think it possible that a Mark IV would be announced.
That was might thoughts when I added a 1DMK2 to my 5D. It has worked out very well. I use the 5D most of the time, but when I need the fps I have the 1dMK2.

Sure!
We knew about the Sony a year in advance. Often Pentax, Olympus, and others, show dummies a year (or more) before they come out. Canon is pretty good about it.

Seems like the best way to go. That was you also get the benefit of the 1.3X crop when it might be most helpful.

I contacted Kirk Enterprise about this handle grip and they said they will make one just like the one you see in the video clip. Cool .... look out for it!

Definitely. I thought the handle grip that Bruce Dorn used on the Wimberley is pretty neat. Anyone knows who makes that?
I guess it hasn't been released yet. Anyhow, looking forward to seeing some photos taken with this piece of equipment. For now, I'll continue to enjoy my D700.
I think it's really interesting that, on the page advertising the video, there is no mention of the A/F capability of the camera and none of the movies follow a moving subject.

Thank you for the Chinese translation, I initially thought that the device had wheels on it.

It will take them awhile, of course. And it should look very much like the PB-1/PB-2 flash extender .... but with just the grip and minus the arm:
