Too bad they stuck with the tired old 20D body, with the poor AF and metering, and no weather sealing. The rest of the package looks pretty good...

is the sensor the same as the 1Ds3 or is it a new one with gapless microlenses ? Being a 1Ds3 owner, I would not be happy if the 5D2's sensor is a new generation of higher quality.

edit: Okay, RG says it's the same with some improvements for noise and shadow detail.

Good try, but you will have to do a lot better to stop yourself looking so daft round here.

David, am I mistaken, or are you the guy that said Canon spent billions on developing EF-S lenses? Still sore because I pointed out how utterly foolish that was?

Talk about daft.. Now there's some real intelligence...rocket surgery at it's finest, right pal?

Chill out guys! At the end of all this it's still just a camera.

As someone who has kids but has zero interest in buying a separate video camera, I can say that having it "available" as a feature is very, very nice. The fact it can record 1080P is even better.

I think Canon did very well with this release. I know there are plenty of people out there who always insist they could have done better, but for the price and features I'm really tempted to give this camera the nod over the 50D when it comes time to upgrade again.

I'd suspect Canon is smart enough to realize that pro photographers are more likely to dump there 1D's for framerate over megapixels once you surpass the 10-12mp mark. And I can assure you they're NOT going to let that happen. As for the AF sensor, maybe it's the fixxed version...no one's shot with it yet.

And the rest I suspect are just upset that it's not called a 3D

Why? It's newer technology.

If you buy a top of the line computer are you upset a year later when a much cheaper computer outperforms what you bought?

What seems to me a total waste of time on an SLR is to add the Full Video HD capability ... Qute from the Spec

"With regard to video, the EOS 5D Mark II captures Full HD video at 30fps as well as VGA / 30fps for the first time on any Canon SLR."

If I want to do video I'll use a camcorder. We could drop this feature and have say environmental seals instead or some other useful feature.

I actually like the 21MP -- computers are so much faster and cheaper these days as well as storage. Allows LOADS of cropping and really big A2 prints.

Of course the 1-series are fine but they do a specific job and are quite heavy to lug around for 8+ hrs a day - especiallly with 70-200 2.8 and 300 2.8 lenses.

The missing thing however on this camera is the 2nd card slot -- with 21MP in RAW some people might need to carry a few spare cards with them. This seems to be rather a strange oversight.

Otherwise for Me I LIKE this camera - with the current "credit Crunch" and the strength of the EUR vs USD it's worth buying one in the US (no import duty (yet) into UK on Digital STILL cameras - even if it does have vide capability..

Cheers

-K

I find the ergonomics of the 20/30/40/5D series very, very nice and haven't held a camera yet that feels better in my hands, well, except for a 1 series.

Poor AF and metering? I've never seen this issue firsthand, can you explain?

As far as weather sealing, it seems to me only about 5-10% of all owners want/require this feature. I know a lot of people with nice cameras and none of them are ever interested in using their gear in the rain, even if it is 100% water proofed. I want protection from the occasional drips and from my understanding the 5D II can handle up to 10mm of rain in 3 minutes.

What a nasty, snide little person you must be in real life.

I bet you don't speak to people like this face to face, just when you have the anonymity of the internet to protect you.

I shan't be playing any longer, go bug someone else, or better still, don't.

right or wrong, considering I paid $8k in January for it, I'm not thrilled....would you be ? That being said, the 1Ds3 has been a great wildlife/bird camera for me. It will be interesting to see good test comparisons of images at various iso's between the two. For me the frame rate just won't cut it, nor will the weak AF array.

Add another one to the "What's wrong with the 5D AF".

I never had any trouble with it nor do I suspect many other shooters. If you want really fast AF then the 1D2/1D3 were designed for that particular purpose.

However I really can't understand why on a 21 MP camera there isn't a second card slot.

They can of course ditch the stupid video component as well.

Cheers

I think you're being rather naive. I too have a 1Ds3, although I had to pay much more for it as I am in the UK, but I knew I was paying a lot for the top model, with a 1-series build, in-camera backup etc.

If you didn't expect that model to be equalled in IQ pretty quickly then you shouldn't have bought it. The 5DII still isn't a pro 1-series, it just has a newer fantastic sensor and some new features.

I'm hoping for a 7D or a 5dmk2-mk2 :P

However, if the price drops down, I won't complain.

Destined Evolution, exactly. Im not gonna even concider getting this camera as used 5Ds are 1/2 priced atm. I would easily shell out 4000$ on a camera with 5D MKII sensor, weathersealing and 45 AF-points, but for that camera i guess i have to wait for another year or two. I might buy another 5D in the meantime, just to have access to full frame digital (for those occasions i actually 'need' digital), but luckily for my line of shooting digital isn't critical.

I've never used a 1D, but given the specs on this new 5D, what are the advantages of getting a 1Ds MkIII? In my quick skim of the specs, all I can see is a questionably better, but certainly different AF system, dual cards, a little higher fps, and a slightly bigger viewfinder. The new 5D has a higher ISO range, a brighter LCD screen, and half the price.

Better AF, weather sealing, build quality, dual cards, fps, 100% viewfinder, and bragging rights.

I probably left something out, so don't shoot me.

I'm nasty? So you have simply forgotten your provocative statement to me? I don't like insults from people like you trying to start something and my fanboy-BS meter is on high. As long as you can say something nasty it's all good right?

I don't want to be put down, belittled, or made fun of for your amusement. This is not the first time you've taken it upon yourself to express your displeasure over something I wrote. If you want to go after me, then take it off line and PM me or send me an email.

Whatever you do, give up the "innocent" act and grow up.

Well, I don't think I'd be "thrilled," but I'd be understanding.

It's all part of the game when you are buying technology products...there will always be something better and cheaper to come along after you spend your hard earned dollars.
