Very cool! I love that place. The studio is in Bushwick right off the Morgan Ave stop but I actually live down in Carroll Gardens. Gotta love that G Train.

Which stand are you using to hold up the box/light? I'm looking for something similar, to use indoors as well as out, but have no idea where to start looking. Thanks for any future input.

That is just a basic Bogen/Mantrotto 60$ stand. Can't remember the exact model number. Any light stand will work, so long as you can stick an umbrella bracket on the top. Or, if you only have a tripod, you can attach the umbrella bracket to that and use the light stand as a tripod as well.
The only time I use a non Apollo softbox is a light I have permanently set up in my studio for head-shots. The light never gets moved, so I leave a traditional speed-ring style box on it, because it never leaves it location and never gets adjusted. The rest of my speed-ring softboxes remain set up, hanging on a wall. I bumped into one the other day while moving something, and I got got dust everywhere. They are just wall decorations now.
nope.. it's a 60" westcott umbrella... I just take the black cover off to use it as a shoot through, then put the black cover over the back to help with spill...

I love the Westcott boxes. Love them.
wow good to know! thanks!
i was considering purchasing the alienbee softboxes but may consider this one instead since it is probably more portable. would you recommend this one over the AB softboxes?
westcott just came out with a HUGE one of these also.

Not technically a "setup shot", but I let a little Flip Ultra roll while I did my first shoot using off-camera lighting. Before this, my experience with off-camera work was really limited to workshops, classes, etc.
Done just for fun. I'd like to be good at it (and so C&C is always welcome), but, in the end, I am purely a hobbyist with little to no aspiration for this to be anything other than a fun hobby...
Yo Simon/DC shooters,
I'm in DC (saw you mention you travel here sometimes) let me know if you ever need an assistant/digi tech here in town @ competitive dayrates.
I also rent a full assortment of Norman (the widow maker ) pack and head setups & portable Norman battery rigs with a full complement of modifiers/accessories if you don't want to schlep your stuff from NYC.
