I just don't understand how a few months ago the Nikon was fantastic and now it isn't? I would love to see the side-by-side to prove it.
I never said it was fantastic. Never said it wasn't either. Just that it's an old formula that needs to be addressed by Nikon.

Well I have to admit that I like none of these shots in particular. The 1.4 seems like a pointless lens because of the awkwardly large size, and no advantage with a wider aperture. I've had sigma's before and they always caused me grief a year or two down the line when new bodies came out. My dog chewed the last one - did me a favor as far as I was concerned. That was a smart dog!
I am sorry your experience with Sigmas have been bad. I guess it isn't the same for everyone.

The sigma 30 f1.4 has tested to be about the worst lens ever made wide open ... yet still some like it. Life is a mystery, I guess?
Sample variation is what it boils down to. My Sig 30 was sharper as heck wide open. And a lot of the folks who dislikled it's wide open performance never really adjusted their shooting to complement 1.4. Lots of people think that razor thin DOF = out of focus.

and actually, I need to mention that I do think Phillip inio's shots are great .... but there is no signature look to the lens there ... in fact it looks like a different lens rendered the image, though it is hard to tell with the way the shots are set up.
I would like to see the bokeh, in something like trees with specular lights in the picture at f 4.0.
Perhaps your expectations are just different from mine. I will say this, this lens is not for everyone

that's a good point, and also why I roll my eyes when people want f/1.2 glass. I understand that more light = better focus in lower light situations, but shooting even at 1.4 is sometimes way too dreamy because of the DOF.
kind of like a lens baby, it's a tool that may change the way you shoot.

Agreed. Plus the fact that the wider open a lens, the more glass you need, the heavier the lenses get.
Still, I like my 30 f/1.4, and have liked all of the Sigmas I've owned (a total of five of 'em - all were great optics). I'd consider the 50 f/1.4 after I've seen what Nikon does with theirs (hopefully cheaper and smaller). I'd still keep my 50 f/1.8's because they're so cheap and light.

By the way, I didn't mean to imply the samples I posted above were anything special - they are just simple snaps I took to try out the lens - since I know some people have been waiting for this lens I thought they might be interesting.
I bought this lens simply to take low light shots indoors, which I expect it to do well. I wasn't expecting anything special about the results like I get from some of my other lenses like my 105DC or 180mm Voigtlander, although so far I am pretty impressed.

I'm glad to hear that Peter, as mine is being delivered tomorrow. (hopefully).. i have a nikkor 50mm f1.4 AIS and that is razor sharp, but i'm done with manually focusing for jobs as my eyesight ain't that great anymore...

+1
I've heard of Sigma's legendary probs but I haven't experienced any. I've had a few now from kit level to top shelf and aside from the finish...no issues. My current 24-70 got a lot of heat. Gotta say though, it's acceptably sharp wide open and get's awesome by f/4.
