p.2 #1 · Selling camera stuff on Paypal&^%$&%^$&^%$

about 3 years ago I had $8593 in my paypal account from sales. and they froze my account because they said they needed to verify who my supplier was and where I got the items from. I told them they are all camera items I purchsed my my photography business that I then sold to turn around and buy new items. They did not care and apparently did not understand me when I told them and they locked my account no matter hat I did to prove it was legit. I faxed them receipts of the items I purchased and they still didnt care.

So im all I lost 2 cameras, 5 lenses and 3 flashes. I would not have shipped the items if I would have known they were going to freeze my account. They froze it 5 days after the sale an I shipped the items.

I still to this day have not got my money from paypal and they will not let me in to my account.

Fuck paypal. I went google and never looked back.

My daughter works for ebay and she believes they are trying to become like an Amazon and less of a flea market. Leaves a pretty nice niche for somebody. Forcing customers to use PayPal without allowing alternatives will imho catastrophically affect their top line.

I (going forward) am considering selling only by personal check or money order /cashiers check. That keeps the buyer from holding you hostage by claiming some bogus defect, unilaterally forcing a refund (yes paypal can just take your money) and keeping your item. Imho eBay has become fatally flawed, and their growth rate is doomed. All the original founders are gone with their billions and they've left bean counters behind to run the business who are switching the business model to something they understand.

No way they can do as good a job as Amazon, either.

I you want some entertaining reading, take a look at the user forum inside eBay.. Their current seller base is beyond pissed off. Since sellers can no longer leave negative feedback, the inmates have taken over the asylum. Ebay clearly wants all the mom and
pop sellers to take a hike.

What is the Google Option for selling stuff? Is is an auction or Any links??

Thanks

Ed

You can no longer leave negative feedback for a buyer?
That's it...no more sales for me.

Nothing major but I'm sure Microsoft and Google are getting ready to pounce on this market. Yahoo tried something years ago but never caught on. Ebay is still the best for getting things sold. Photography equipment is a slam dunk if you've built up a good reputation over the years. Trying to jump in now as a seller would definitely be tough as people are little more wary, money a little tighter, and scammers more savvy. Luckily the international buyers have picked up the slack with their stronger currency. I was able to sell two F5 to Canadians but never got anyone in the US or a forum to buy film SLRs. 99% of my sales are buy it now with immediate payment required and that seems to keep the scammers away.

zoetmb, craigslist is hit or miss. sometimes people follow-up but a lot of times nope. lots of flakes not even frosted FM is still the best place for information/discussions and selling used personal equip.

Ya, you are right. However, I tried for several weeks to sell my 35mm shift lense and nobody here on FM was interested. Even with trades.
Put it on ebay two days ago, with a buy it now for 320 and it sold in one day.

Umm this is a situation where you should sue or at least threaten legal action. Most people sue when it is not at all necessary, but in this case you really should.

I had pretty much the same experience. Too many tire kickers looking for bargains (to resell on ebay no doubt).

Ya, but I asked for quite a bit less here on FM. Still no interest. I guess everyone wanted the newer tilt-shifts for $300!!!

All of the previous citations are why I have never used PayPal, and I don't use ebay very much anymore. If someone won't send me a MO , I'll ship COD or list it on Craigslist for a direct sale. Ebay and Pay Pal are just getting out of control!!!!

I don't get it. Unless they could prove that equipment was stolen or acquired illegally, how could they possibly have beat you in court?

Were there disputes from buyers about what you sold them?

Papparazzanick, I have my own horror story about PayPal; I am sure I am not the only one, AND I have over 100 positive feedbacks and no negatives—all on big dollar items ($500–3000).

Short story: bought ~2,500 USD worth of gear in three transactions within 24 hours (seller came up with more interesting MF gear as we emailed back and forth). When package arrived, the two key lenses were not in it. Luckily, the FedEx guy was there when I opened it; I took images of packaging and the items that DID arrive. Sneaky bastard. When I called him, he said his assistant "packed the box: and that replacement lenses would be sourced and sent. Of course, they never arrived.

PayPal's response? Because I paid the total in three amounts, the protection cover did not exist! Read the fine print. Un-F&&%-believable.

So, I went to my local bank here with the photographic evidence, and the email trail. They took just *four days* to determine that the transaction was fraudulent—and they deducted the missing $1,100 from PayPal directly! Brilliant.

Now—here's the question—what you you think PP's response was? They simply debited my account the disputed amount—even though the bank had determined that the transaction was fraudulent—and hence I found that my account was in "negative balance". I refused to pay, telling them to chase the fraudulent seller, as with any other fraudulent credit card transaction. No dice. *They never chase fraudulent sellers*, incredibly—and no explanation given.

70-odd emails later, still the same. Now that account is deregistered. The crazy thing is that I simply opened a new bank account, limited its debit amount, registered that with PP, and was back in business. Interesting times.

Final remarks: here in Australia, eBay's plans to make PP the only way business can be done has been ruled unfair by our consumer watch dog. Watch this space. Personally, I will definitely be investigating alternatives.
