Anyone already know the European price for the 50D? Canon Dutch site says it becomes available at 8 oct 2008
Daan, expect around 995 euro for the body (this is based on introduction price according to retail offerings from Canon Benelux). Octovber 8th is not that bad? At least we know that Canon products are available when announced. I know companies with different marketing policies. Anyway before spending your money, you might want to wait for the other camera to come! It's EOSfun time!

5d replacement will come at photokina, patience
I'm guessing the 5D is going to be more of the same. If you're expecting a massive new feature set to compete with Nikon, prepare to be disappointed. They are upgrading things where it counts, final image quality. Big upgrades in megapixels, noise levels and capabilitys, and improved LCD. For me these are also the things I am looking for now. I don't want 50 new ways my camera can annoy me or break.
although playing devils advocated, if a camera gets AF correct only to the 4MP resolving level, 21MP on a 5D2 or 15MP on a 50D won't provide that upgraded image quality.
oh well should be awesome for static scenesl and for the poorly lit soccer fields and indoor basketball (when it does manage to hit the focus ). If it really delivers on the 1 stop better while giving 50% more MP hen wow maybe night soccer will finally look good! and indoor basketball ISO1600 looking like ISO640! wow if true!
i'd still rather $300 more and the 1dmkiin AF chip, but oh well, more money in the bank doesn't hurt (unless the new 5d tempts me instead )
it is puzzling that canon 100% refuses to address that hole.
maybe as that guy said they are still into the holding it back for the 60D philosophy.
heck this cam with a 1dmkiin AF chip in it would give even the D700 a serious run I think

Oh boy, this is turning into yet ANOTHER whine about Canon thread...sooo old and really depressing...enjoy the moaning, carping and fussing.
Which of these responses will be most common?
* "Canon failed in making me happy"
* "If only they had included X I would be happy."
* "Another small upgrade? I refuse to upgrade every 18 months. They can't make me."
* "For $1300 I was expecting the specs of an $1800 camera"
* "Nikon forever, woot woot"
* Some sarcastic reference to Direct Print button
* "I understand it's a Prosumer, that's why I want the Professional stuff at the Consumer price."

995,00 euro... That is a bargain already at introduction. Very agressive pricing
It will also be interesting to see what the other cam will be like. Although I already have a very good FF cam To complement this with a crop cam would be the most versatile option.

Dont know about the Euro price but warehouseexpress pre order it at £1199 with free 8gig card and bag
Hope it reduces in price when it ships
That's almost 1500,00 euros... If EOSfun is right, you are better off ordering one in the Netherlands (995,00 euros). Never will I pay 1500,00 euros for a 50D...
I totally agree with you EOSfun . I don't think and I don't hope that 50D is much better than 40D when it comes to image quality. Just like old time with 40D-30D-20D.
So, all I think when 50D officially come out is just it's a great time to buy a new 40D at a very reasonable price.

WOW ... this is a big upgrade ... I just did a side-by-side of the Canon 50D versus 40D.
One thing I'm curious about I'm pretty certain that Canon uses a thumbnail for playback ... so when you zoom in 10X, it's very difficult to tell if you truly have dead-on focus ... hopefully this is corrected in the 50D since they (finally!) have the high-res display.

Agree, extra LCD res is useless unless the file display system is improved.
With technology, if you can bring it to market first you can charge a premium, if at the same time as competitors then you can compete with a reasonable profit margin. If you bring it in late then
I don't know how sales of the 40D compare now to the recent past or how they compare to the competition, however, I'm sure Canon does. My feeling is that they have current technology and they have to bring it to market now in order to get a reasonable ROI.
Against the opposition if you cannot compete on features then you compete on price point whilst including those features that are most important to your target market. 50D vs D300 for instance.
So to the 50D. It now has a high def LCD, AF live view, higher ISO and most importantly more MP, amongst other features. Enough with its brand name to sway new buyers of this level of camera. Is it significant enough for upgraders. That entirely depends on what is important to you.
I currently have a 30D and 5D. For me the only feature that will entice me to upgrade my crop camera is pro AF. There does however, need to be a point of difference between a pro and prosumer body. Canon has decided that one of these points of difference is AF.
So, in light of this significant announcement by Canon, as I clear away the mist in front of my crystal ball, I see not a 50D, 5DII nor 90D in my future, I see a 1DmkIV.

Is the 995 euro price including VAT? And it appears to be an introduction price?
Anyways, £1200 is the usual over the top pre-order price that people who have less time (or sense?) than money pay. Once it starts shipping and other shops get it it will drop by £200. At the moment warehousexpress is the only place I could find even a reference for the 50D, so that explains the price. Plus, Xmas is coming and the D300 is dropping to £900.
Is it? The D300 body only is now £948 and even if they both drop to £900 the D300 is a better camera albeit with slightly less megapixels. Unlike our American cousins who will still have a $400 price difference which they use to excuse the consumer body features of the 50D, for us Brits it's a no brainer, given the same price who the heck would buy a 50D?
Well Beni, I'm not American nor British, and I will definitely buy a 50D. And I even prefer the 40D over D300. That's why I'm using a 40D at this moment.

People that like Canon better...it is a no brainer.
Like it better for what though? Serious question, not trying to be negative, what would 50D buyers like better that they would take a lower speced camera for the same price? I'm interested. If the answer is the glass then doesn't that just mean that Canon have used their popularity in glass to provide less camera features at a given price point? Again this is with reference to the 50D and D300 being the SAME price in the UK (50D more expensive at release). If I'm a guy in a shop wanting to buy either the 50D or D300 and both are the same price, why would you advise me to take a 50D eventhough it isn't the pro body the D300 is?
