The 50D is catching up with the Nikon D300 but not leap-frogging it. Let's see what Canon will do surpass the Nikon D700.

Thats how it happens . Next time, you will not ask. It happened the same way with Nikon too. I saw in Nikon's case before it was pulled down.

If Canon releases this, with these specs, 1 year after they did the 40D, I'll be both surprised, and miffed.

I'd normally agree but they have had a "lesser" camera (XSi) with 12 MP's out for six months now. People don't like paying more for the 10 MP 40D. It really isn't "due" for six months but I could see this happening now. I think it's a pretty decent upgrade actually. At least if they have kept noise and diffraction concerns in check. I can't believe the belly aching going on here. Still anxious to see a 5D and 1D3 successor though.

Eh, maybe I'm being a little harsh, obviously, things depreciate. I remember when I bought my G3 through Dell for 700ish (too high), and thought I got a good deal.

Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely 0 problem with innovation. Like Russ said, some people are never happy with anything. I remember the 40D coming out, and everyone saying it's dog crap, and for the money it's a crap update. Sorry, but I think every penny more for the 40D I spent is worth it, over the 30D.

Honestly, if Canon says

Here's a 40D on steroids (essentially what that 50D is), with more MP (even though this doesn't matter AS much for me, getting more ppi will be nice, and cropping will be nice too) micro adjust (the fps seems off to me, yeah Sean makes a point saying it's not that much of a loss, I just don't see Canon releasing LESS fps on a HIGHER model) for the same price of the 40D, that'd be awesome.

It seems like it gets out of hand sometimes though,

"Weather sealed, in body IS, 7980 AF points, micro adjust this that the other thing" We want 8000$ camera specs at 1000$ camera price. And while that would be gosh darned sweet, I just don't see it happening. I want it to, but it won't. Kind of like, I want Adriana Lima to knock right on my door, have her, Maria Sharapova and Diane Neal all tell me that it's okay, and my wife has a signed permission slip for me to through down with them...it just won't happen.

Why honestly shouldn't I be miffed if it comes out? For near the price range of a 40D? I just bought my 40D at the end of May. Is Canon saying to me, screw buying our current model, wait 6 months, and we'll release one that's better? For the same/similar cost? Again, no problem with technology and innovation, and if it comes out I'm going to be happy. Stan on here pointed something out. If Canon is pushing those ISO's that high, that means that our noise levels at the lower ISO's are going to get better. We're going to get more for the dollar, and that's what it's about. Me being miffed at a new model coming out, is just hindsight if that makes sense. Then again, that would only be IF this comes out. If it doesn't then all of the 50D threads are a moot point.

Please don't mistake what I'm saying as belly aching. Anytime the company gives you MORE than you were getting before at the same price point, we should be happy.

A couple of comments that have been made here are interesting to me. The pixel pitch/density is real. I think this could turn into a real deficit with the camera. We have been fairly lucky so far to not have diffraction be a real concern for most shooters, but I think we might see it really coming into play with this new camera. Also, this will be pushing lenses. Does everyone remember how when the 1Ds came out that everyone said that it demanded the best lenses. After the 1Ds Mark II came out it everyone said that it REALLY

More pixels doesn't mean diffraction is more of a problem.

No, actually I was referring to the countless others belly aching about this and that. I think it's a reasonable upgrade. (If true) Again, I think the recent Nikon (and others) advances won't really be countered for a year or so since the cameras coming out now have been on the books for a while.

what about better AF? what about weather sealing? what about triggering external flash guns with the built in flash? what about letting the body AF with F8? what about mirror lock up button or least a button that can be programed? what about a grip that actually sits right and has all the buttons? what about more Dynamic range instead of more MP?

Isn't mirror lock up relatively easy to access (either thru' My Menu or user mode)? Or are you asking for Nikon functionality in a Canon body... in which case why not jump onto the Nikon system? Do you actually miss shots because you do not have quick immediate access to mirror lock-up? Do you use mirror lock-up for >90% of your shots?

The importance of mirror lock-up is either over-hyped or just one of those niggles that allow people to whine on and on and on...

As for the rest of what you asked for, they'll appear in the 60D/70D/80D etc upgrades. Oh, and you'll expect yearly upgrades for APS-C cameras from now on, just like compact digicams.

It appears that Canon feels the APS-C format is for the messes who have little need for those fancy D300 functionalities. With its lower price, the 40D sells much better than the D300 in Japan. The Canon 50D is aimed squarely at the upcoming D90 upgrade.

I'm always curious about where data like this comes from. Do you have an Internet link or a source to share?

Thanks! I don't speak Japanese. Does this page refresh with new data every once in a while, or is it a question of tracking down new links every month?

They have weekly data. But every 6 months or so, they'll have a compilation of the results.

This cam ought to make a lot of birders and such happy. Between the 1.6 crop and the 15meg sensor, the amount of pixels on target will be terrific.

Might even be good for long distance surfing shots, to get just a little more "reach" than the MK3 can get. Hmmmmmmm...............

That said, I honestly wouldn't put it past someone to hack the site. Why else would they take it down so fast? Why Canon China, and not Canon every-freakin'-where-else?

I would not discount the possibility a hack-job either.

However, the "official leak" of the 5D was a brochure that first appeared in Spain (and in Spanish). This was eight months after a named Canon-Spain official said in an interview that Canon would that year release a new model between the 20D and the 1D.

At any rate, annual models of the two lower tiers of consumer cameras doesn't surprise me. That's where the real money is, where most new purchasers are, and those new purchasers are looking for "the latest thing," so that's where manufacturers are likely to give them constant "latest things."

Given that the 50D will no doubt be released at the same price as the D300 is currently it should be in the bracket for direct comparison and it loses very badly. No doubt the fanboys will not be able to see it though...

The D300 is currently $1600 at B&H. The 40D is $969. The 50D body-only will probably be $1199 or $1299. I'm not sure if I am a "fanboy" for suggesting that those are not the same prices.
