Now back to the OP's problem after 4 and a bit pages................
Which do we think is better for him?
I'd say the 17-55, not because I've got it and its superb and everything, but because it seems as if you'd value the wider angle and the extra speed, the IS is just a bonus. while the 17-55 has 50mm less reach over the 24-105 I think the gain in 7mm wide will be worth while. Also the 17-55 was made for crop cameras and works a dream on the 40D. If you want I'll show you by posting images from the wedding I will be doing on friday if you want, you may have to wait a week though till like next wed.

And as the original poster, thanks for this guidance and all that followed it! I am glad it stimulated active thought and conversation
Am now awaiting 17-55 along with a "nifty fifty" so look forward to getting to use it as often as possible.
Could be like me and just for play in low light that is the main reason i bought my Sigma 30 was to play with portraits at night.

I am selling a 35/1.4 L because the 17-55/2.8 IS has made it redundant. When do you foresee using a 50/1.8 instead of the 17-55/2.8 IS?
I currently have a 30D and for a while I used the Canon EF 24-85 as my main walking around lens. As other people have noted, I found that 24mm was not wide enough when trying to photograph buildings/architecture. I subsequently acquired the Canon EF-S 10-22 for when I need to shoot "wide". My small bag 'kit' is currently 10-22, 24-105 f4 IS, and 100-400 IS and this provides the flexibility for most situations. I also sometimes carry the 50mm f1,4 if I think I may be shooting indoors.
