p.2 #2 · The girlfriend...

I would suggest using only one lens to start. Longer the better for close portraits. Leave auto focus on but turn camera to full manual. Pick a ISO then start adjusting to get your exposure. Learn what each function does. You know you want a shallow DOF so lock it on F4 or 5. Now the Shutter, Slow shutter allows natural light in the photo and if outside I assume you want natural light look. Try 1/80 to start then 125 etc. Too nuch light then lower ISO to 50 or 100. Too dark slow shutter down or open up the F stop to F4 or 3.5 or up the ISO. All will do the same to allow more light but have slightly different look in the photo. Learn the look that fits you.

Forget fill flash until you master the simple continuous light shot. After you have a understanding of the relationship of each function add fill just enough to light the eyes. Again slower shutter is the key and have that flash on manual so you can see what really is happening with each adjustments.

If you were on auto you can see the exposure is not correct in your samples. Sometimes the camera gets it right but seldom if in less then perfect conditions. But then again I have not used auto in at least 8 years. Manual is simple faster and more accurate for me to do what I want.

Just keep trying one adjustment at a time.

Ha Ha ! Personally I didn't even notice how long ago the OP was made - though I don't know how jefferies1 came across this thread ! However the advice in the thread was actually good so maybe someone (me !) can take note. Good advice is never out of style.
