i no longer use my 70-200/2.8 on my D3 because of corner softness and vignetting. it is completely unacceptable for a top of the line lens.

I haven't seen any evidence of vignetting, which I was concerned about. No real obvious loss of sharpness in the corners so far either, but I'll need to test that a bit more rigorously this weekend.
the vignetting doesn't get acceptable until f8 but the corner softness never goes away. for landscape work on the D3 it's completely unacceptable. i end up having to use it on one my my DX bodies instead, if i bother to bring the lens anymore.

Yes and in that surfer shot you do see a little vignetting, but really...did that hurt the picture? If you have a face that completely fills the screen, it might hurt the image, but it seems to me that 95% of the time, this is pixel peeping. Would it be better if it didn't? Sure. But I really don't think it's that big a deal. It would not stop me from buying this lens again.

I used this lens on my N80 long before I went digital. Never noticed an issue. I realize that it seems to be more pronounced on digital sensors, but it just doesn't seem that big of a deal to me. If Nikon replaces this lens in the next year, I suppose we can believe they thought it was an issue. If not, they apparently don't....Show more →
Well said. Nice to see a civilized voice in the crowd.
Thanks for putting things into perspective. So the 70-200VR fares well against the competition. Could it be made to be better? Sure, and likely in time Nikon will do that; after all, the 70/80-200 range has been one of the most updated zoom ranges. I guess with the likes of the 24-70 and the stellar performance most lenses give on DX format, we are getting a little spoiled.
