Canon has never committed patricide in the 3+ decades I've used their gear. Gimmicks aside, the good, solid technology always resides in the top of the line. The OK stuff goes in the other cameras.
But one could say that the EOS-3 with its 45 AF points (before the 1-series) is an exception to this rule.

Canon's daddy is stronger than Nikon's daddy. Nikon are beating Canon right now but wait until Canon's daddy shows up.
Pretty much how I read it too. The original post could have been neutrally written and the thread wouldn't have gone south if there had been less of that tone and less of the silly words put in the mouths of Nikon and Canon.

Yes in this shop. www.fotofile.net/
todays price is, without VAT
1Ds3------$ 6150
1D3-------$ 3382
still expensive like crazy, but more bearable compared to the rest of the world, especially the UK.
at prices like these, i still can't believe that these are just cameras that we're talking about here. something that takes pictures... jeez... it better make love to me for that price!

Tim, yes I have. We'll also get the 430EX II. 20% quicker recharging and quiet recharging. Pretty obvious since the 580EX II has that so no surprises there.
you may be right about the 5dmkii and all.
there have been a very few scatteredposts where someone has said something like "nothing to worry, you'll see soon", almost like they are insiders under NDA and can't say more. One of those types also said something about more MP than you'd think and a very new type of feature (video?).
the non-split line would also fit the leaked book title.

Oh bloody hell , give me strength. It's not that hard (for those who don't know what's going on).
Summary:
+ Appears Nikon aimed at releasing the D700 ahead of the 5D MKII (which they did)
+ Canon don't think the D700 specs are a match for their new camera.
+ Canon execs vewy vewy happwy.
+ 430EX II will be released in Sep.
+ 5D will not stay on like some thought
+ There will not be a split line like many hoped for.
Can I hold anyone elses hand!
but do you think they will split the line?
oh and what about a 430EX II? Yay or nay? No thoughts?
I think the main reason Nikon announced the D700 way before photokina is because they have another body to match the 1DsMKIII.......
I am hoping for the better BUT expecting the worst for Canon.
HOPING that in the 3 years since the 5D was announced, they had spent enough R&D to trump the D700 in IQ and features...........
EXPECTING the worst: Due to the lack of competition in the Small Body/FUll frame segment, Canon might've rested in its laurels and will announce a minor step up in the new 5D........ala, 30D, 40D and so forth.
In any case, I could care less on what body Canon announces - I am more interested in the new lens line-up................

ulri, give it a rest. where's your insightful contribution to this thread?
Show me your friends insightful and rational contribution to this thread? Stating that me, when i point out trollish behaviour, is trolling is just over the top ironic. Please start to think. The "we have to support the oldies of the forum, even when they act like asshats"-behaviour 2-3 of you have is both transparent and highly ludicrous.
The D700 is a real blessing to Canon Shooters... I'm seeing brand new 5D's with USA warranties under $2000 and as low as $1800. .. Maybe not the latest and greatest any more, but a helluva tool for a helluva price. I have been straddling the Nikon/Canon fence using a D200 and a 5D for my wedding business... Had planned to move it all to Nikon, and then... the current price point of the 5D could swing things the other way. I have decent luck/results with my MF Nikon lenses on the 5D. The D700 may be the coolest thing since pockets in your pajamas, but it ain't close to a thousand bucks better than the 5D.
... On the topic though. These moves by the manufacturers are not done in haste. I have no doubt that whatever Canon is about to release, it has been in trial mode for the last year.
Nikon reduces costs and R&D by sharing technology across its range. It's not a new technique, and it does help to distribute newer technologies more readily. New management does funny things for companies.
I hope and think that Canon will go a partial new route and at least give us better weather sealing in the new 5d. Sony, olympus and pentax gives their users relativly good weather sealing even in low-end bodies, and I think that Canon should implement this in a camera that most likely will cost 3000 usd ++. Secondly I want spot metering at each af-point, or atleast at a few select af-points, not only in the center ring. Other than that, I guess I want what everybody else wants, good high iso quality, good resolution/IQ, good dynamic range, good color rendering.. the usual stuff..
Edit: And, I want a configurable button instead of the print button and af-support lights in body
