Hmmm, ok, now I recognize the "sub-mirror fix" and the "grommet" may be one and the same.
So much for that; and given the rest of the discussion with "non-kid" techie, he sure made it sound like the problem's been fixed. Wow, that's disappointing.
I'll continue the conversation if I see him when I go back and challenge him on these points.

Photon, thanks for sharing your test. Does your 1D Mark III experience any "ghosting" as seen by Jeff and others when out in the field?
No, I haven't found anything like ghosting, nor the apparent tilting of the focal plane that Jeff reported with his first MkIII. The only concerns I had were some cases of AF apparently locking onto a contrasty background when I had very carefully placed a selected AF point over my foreground subject. This behavior seems to have improved with the firmware update (1.2.3?). I'm talking about static subjects, such as outdoor group portraits, and occasionally moving subjects like a wedding processional. It's always hard to be sure there was no user error, though I'd not had those problems (or VERY rarely) with my 1DMkII over many weddings and other jobs.
In sports shooting (soccer), I've had similar keeper rates with both cameras, fwiw. The MkIII shows worthwhile quality improvement when dim light requires higher ISO, and also focuses faster then. In deliberate shooting such as landscapes and flowers, I am absolutely thrilled with the quality of the MkIII images.
Well, not only did Canon send me a Mark III, but they sent a new 'yellow dot' one, SN 570XXX!! The battery is charging! Let's see how this one does, but I am excited about the possibilities!

I notice from his included 'long jump' photo that Rob has apparently resorted to shooting at f/5.6 now...
Writing on the wall?
Hey Jeff, have you tried sending your cameras and lenses to Canon for calibration?
Sorry, could not resist. Sorry to hear it's still not sorted out... The bright side is - I've got no noticeable 1Dwhatever lust to speak of at the moment. My credit card and my husband appreciate your efforts very much.

Hey Antje, nice to hear from you after so long! I'm so glad I could be of service to someone, and I know how important it is to keep the better half happy. I only wish I'd heeded my better half before buying this thing.
As far as calibration goes, no, I haven't, as the lenses have worked properly on other bodies, and most of the time perform normally on the MkIII. It's the inconsistency factor that is impossible to nail down. Until this last weekend I was relatively happy with this second camera, but it finally provided me results that were inexplicable by any source other than an error somewhere in the system.

I am most unhappy to report that this new body I got today is worse(!!!!!!!!!) than the old one! It's already packed, back in the box it came in, and is ready to go back. I already have a nasty-gram in to Canon...It's a yellow dot, 570xxx serial...
This is not cool...I even went by a friend's to test with some L lenses...same results...if anyone is interested, I will post links to today's stuff with the new body...

I know that. That's exactly why I was so surprised to see that Henry is finding the AF in his 1Ds Mk III so much better than his 1D Mk III.
Happy shooting,
Yakim.
As I mentioned earlier, I have experienced a huge difference in AF accuracy between the 1DMk3 and the 1DsMk3. Basically, I just leave it in Servo now and it is fine for static or moving subjects. I have shot everything from GP cars at Watkins Glen to track and field to butterflies to flowers to politicians and not had the camera screw up (I have - repeatedly - but the camera has been good.)
The only time I have experienced any problems is when shooting with my 300mm F4 across a lake at a small boat. Very erratic but it was also very hot and humid and there is a strong possibility that environmental factors were wrecking havoc with the AF and the shot was a tosser anyway.
I would have to disagree with some of the comments that the AF systems are the same. They may be designed the same way but potentially significant differences exist simply because of the variation in the parts used to create FF and 1.3X bodies. It is certainly possible that while they are intended to work the same that they don't because those differences. Another potential factor is that the software may be different to handle the differing frame rates.

That sucks! I guess you'd better skip buying that lottery ticket today. I wonder though why some people seem cursed when it comes to this camera while thousands of others just buy it and it works fine.
