Just asking...I got a loaner body that actually works the best of any that I've had so far (three total, including a previous loaner)...It looks really good!

Just stumbled in and noted I have the same symptoms on two 40D bodies. One (the older one) has been to Canon for repair and came back with a new mirror box and shutter actuator and was perfect. It did not last long and the newer one is showing the same thing. Mine however are not on and off. It's consistent.
I called and asked to be put higher in the food chain and spoke to a gent who said they will be contacting me. It's been too long. I'll be hounding them again Monday.

That would be consistent with this being a problem with forwards/backwards movement of the AA filter. Don't forget that forwards backwards movement of this filter by a tiny tiny amount would lead to dramatic loss of sharpness.
Why would it move? And how could it move at all? Isn't it suppose to be firmly attached?

I'm definitely going to hold onto mine then because it seems to be right on the money. I've yet to have a negative experience with that camera.
I would also.
I know I'm having bad luck but also know there are tons of folks with 40Ds' and such whom are doing well.
My equipment was doing so well and it just went south. I'm still hanging in there.

Had the same problems with my MKIII sent it back again and requested it be replaced so my new 57xxx body is arriving today. Hopefully they put it through QC before they shipped it!

You have the 1Ds MkIII, right? Those shots like fine to me. I assume you are happy with it? I seem to remember your having an early 1DIII, with problems.

That's pretty impressive, wonder what all this hoopla has cost Canon $?

prob more then they had ever expected. If they done this right to begin with they would of made more money then they had ever expected lol
I sent this back 3 times but it wasn't till I joined CPS did they offer a replacement.

I don't think anyone is saying that you can't get any decent shots from the camera, it does work. And mine is better since the submirror repair and the very latest firmware. But there is still something pretty quirky about this camera at times. I'm guessing RG will report improvements from all of Canon's efforts but it still doesn't match the AF performance and reliability of the MarkII. And that's probably going to be the end of it. Then people will be awaiting the MarkIV. Any takers?

Well, everyone, I think I am at the end of my journey. I got a call from the Canon rep today, saying, that if I wanted to, I could keep the body (that works!) I already have!! He will provide the stuff that wasn't in the box (instruction manuals, CDs, etc.), and start the warranty on it as of today. The images off of this body are much better than I've seen with the other three (yes, three) that I've had previously...when I have time, I will post some unedited images...

While I normally can't be bothered with rumours on new models etc., I have heard that alot of people are expecting a 1D Mark 4 to be released early '09. Whether that is true or not I don't know but it would seem logical anyway, don't quote me on it!

Wow. I haven't been over to the Canon forums since I dumped my Edsel Mk3. Seeing Jeff's post from this month, and Hrow's comment makes me feel even better about switching.
My mk3 went to Canon 3x. The last time was because it still had issues after the fix, and the repair ticket said "corrected mirror repair", which means they didn't fix the fix correctly the first time!!!
But like the others, the camera was hit or miss on focus and was not the best AF I've ever had on a Canon camera (that would be the old EOS-3, I was disappointed to see AF performance go down with the D30). So I switched in the spring and I am really glad that I did.
