Hey, that's nothing - our little fella recently developed a stone in his bladder (the size of a pea it turned out) and needed surgery...spent about £250 on a pet that had cost us £10 to buy...but worth every penny

I'm glad you did that - friends don't have price tags, do they? One of my chinchillas died a few years ago after only eleven years of constant and various health problems. I was a student when I bought her, didn't know she was sick, and lived on water and dry pasta for months to pay for her bills. Never ever regretted a single cent (well, actually Pfennig back then).
After her death, when I looked for another friend for Moppel, I had a hard time finding a female, and I wanted a really nice one because Moppel is so "introverted". Last resort was a pet store, and there was this insanely expensive white/silver chinchilla kid... I didn't think I could afford her, and hey, all I wanted was someone nice! Then the lady let the outrageously priced animal out of her cage, and she immediately climbed on my shoulder and put her little paws on the side of my neck. All I could say was "Do you take debit cards?" Everyone got along right away and still does.
