The faster the lens the easier it is to focus it. Tip: If your taking WO portraits of someone just focus on their eyes and ignore everything else in the frame.

It is not true with 5D standart focusing screen, even with 1Ds Mark 3 srtandart focusing screen to focus rokkor is hard task.
But what is true - focusing screen on Sigma sd 14 is bright and easy to use with fast lense it is already like with microlenses.

The FL 58mm f1.2 is an older design than the FL 55mm f1.2 and its only single coated...The FL 55mm f1.2 has at least two coatings.
I know of someone who decided to follow my lead and convert his FL 58mm f1.2 to SA mount as well, but apparently its somewhat complicated to convert than the FL 55mm f1.2.

I have yet to do this mod, but I agree that focusing with the high-precision screens is a breeze.

Can you offer more feedback on the difference the magnifier makes?

Is this something that I really ought to do before my trip to Japan? (I plan to do a lot of shooting and I use almost exclusively manual focus lenses.)

I'd be interested in Koji's opinion here, as well (and anyone else who has done this same mod.)

This magnifier increases size of viewfinder by 1.2 time and that state is more or less equal in size (not in brightness ) to 1Ds Mark3 and suggest to use it with ef-s focusing screen and it will be easy to focus with Rokkor or any other manual lense.
You have to try, because it is really really usefull.

After seeing this, i did some looking around. Most eyepieces are the same. I took out the minolta x570 and placed my canon 5d eyepiece on it. A little tight but fit. Then I did some searches for eyepiece magnifiers and found a minolta magnifer vn in ex shape at KEH and its on its way. What is nice is that it flips up out of the way. The only thing I am not sure about is the degree of magnification.

I don't find focusing with the Ee-S (you mean "Ee-S", not "Ef-S", right?) very difficult at all.

But bigger is certainly better as far as VFs go

I'm heading out in an hour or so to buy one.

Did you need to mess with your diopter at all after installation?

the screen name or the pic?

:-)

The FM software cut off my requested screen name when I signed up, and I didn't realize it until I had used it so much I couldn't easily change it...

Oh, well.

Nice mod.
What was the name of that guy here who keeps talking about how his big nose always gets in the way? Somebody should point him towards this.

Yes, the DK-17M certainly does have the secondary benefit of extending the eyepiece. Call it "nose relief."

On the other hand, I find I need to have my eye extremely close to the eyepiece in order to see the whole frame. So close, in fact, that the oils from my eyelashes end up on the glass, which I suspect is causing a slight blurring effect. I'm happy for my daughters that they have inherited my eyelashes, but I'd be happier to have shorter ones, myself. Maybe I'll have to wipe the glass and my eyelashes with "Eclipse" before shooting

Anyone who wears eyeglasses ought to be aware that this mod is probably not for them. I cannot imagine trying to get another lens involved and still maintain a good view of the VF frame. I wear glasses, but not ever when I shoot.
