No - it's well established (as per National Geographic over the years) that black people naked are OK - but whites aren't!

Spit the coffee on this one. Just wow!

1. What are our community standards? What community? Local, national, international? Highest common denominator or the lowest? What is the role of an artist in this respect?

2. Does the 'action' of the girl in the picture constitute sexual conduct?

3. Does this picture lack serious artistic value?

Judging from the responses of several people in this thread I see we're approaching fast to a point where images posted on these servers should be labeled with tags that specify if they're appropriate for viewing from people of different cultures.

<sarcasm>Interpreting the legalese in other posts I believe that Fred Miranda and Sheila above should be prosecuted for hosting and posting respectively the links to this "pornographic" image. The same for the newspaper that does it.</sarcasm>

So, label it out people.

As for the mentioned image that currently resides in my hard drive, I don't think it's pornographic (shocking, maybe) by any stretch of the definition. Also, by depicting a debatable (or offensive for some) subject doesn't make it bad taste, either.

The fact is, there are people out there who DO find it pornographic. You obviously are not a parent.

Exactly!! I have always maintained that this forum is much too "blokey" and because of that, I now rarely post images as young women in various stages of undress are not my forte I have often suggested to Fred that the People forum should be split into two .. those who like the "glam" shots and those who prefer other forms of humanity! But in vain. One certainly cannot dispute that males are definitely in the majority on the People forum and the majority rules I guess.

Sheila

The problem you have there is Bill Henson's shot isn't 'glam', indeed, for me it would fall into your 'humanity' category because it is a photo about the human condition

There will always be those to defend the right to shoot heroin into their veins or what they see as art and what the majority may see as garbage.

Wrong. I'm a parent of two (b/g) and still don't see the "porn" side of the image.
However, I do respect the sensitivities of other people and I'm all for public safety/security, but, I do have a problem when law enforcement plays the role of an art critic.
I understand that people have filed complains in Australia and the judges had to react, somehow.
But, in the same way that I condemn the threats of the muslims towards the artists that depicted the original Muhammed cartoons, in the same way I have to condemn what is happening with this image.

Since, there's no legal definition of art how can you tell what is and what isn't?

Given that Henson was shooting to create art, it is not porn, but whether it was the parents or who ever who gave permission, it is exploitation and it is wrong. In my previous post I alluded to the fact that children of that age are extremely modest by nature. Getting a 14 yr old to pose naked before a stranger or even a family member is plain wrong.
I have four daughters, 2 bankers, a fashion model and stylist, and a uni student. My girls and their friends can be found at the beach in summer wearing their bikinis and everyone of my daughters and their friends have one word to describe Henson's photos.
Exploitation

Annie Hippiewitz..

She has a name. It's Annie Leibovitz. This is the second time you've denegrated her here by mangling her name.

You don't need to like her lifestyle, her politics or even her photography, but a little respect for her accomplishments would be appropriate.

Back in the Dark Ages, she came to my class at Art Center and spent an afternoon with us. She was fascinating. A good friend of mine once worked as her primary assistant whenver she was in L.A. He admires and respects her and found working with her a joy.

Annie has taken some incredible photographs. She's also taken some historic photographs. Why the dissing?

Agreed. The problem seems to be that there is a small but vocal minority that believes the human condition is pornographic.
