Mark,
very good examples of Sigma 12-24.
I have a question about this photo http://www.imagicdigital.com/photos/DSCF0001-HDR.html
Have you digital increased dynamic range of this photo with two exposures and/or used shadow recovery?
The sky is not extremely overexposed and there is a good shadow detail.
Usually such kind of shots produce high contrast results with almost white skys and black shadows.

Very impressive results!
I still wonder which one will hold better mechanically and which one will hold detail better on enlargements. Sigma looks like a winner.

Not a darned thing I could do to get rid of those pesky ghosts. I'll have to attack them with my clone!
Unless you were frequently using filters with the Nikkor 12-24mm I doubt you'd miss it much. Can you try it out at your local shop? You might want to use the Sigma for a few days before selling the Nikkor, just in case.
I'd like to give Nikon's DX Fisheye a try too. I'd better put it on my list (page 6, line 43 of my list, that is).
Someone on the Canon side has posted a way to ,ake a filter holder for the sigma , and it looks prety good , hey i just noticed in the left hand side there is a ghost photographer there? Is it GDS?

I used shadow recovery for that shot. Mutliple exposures don't work well when there are branches in the foreground unless there is no wind at all. Even a slight breeze creates too much movement.

The bottom photo (Sectarion's previos post) seems to exhibit signs of barrel distortion -- might be fixable in PS --- I think if you tried the same shot on a FF or film camera it would be significantly more pronounced.
However on a less than FF camera (1.5X etc) it's certainly value for money and I do like the pics.
Kyle-
Good point I never got around to measuring the barrel distortion. Here's a full-sized crop from the Grand Central Station image showing the extent of the barrel distortion. It exists, but is extremely minimal. In the downsampled image the offset would have been one or two pixels. I measure a 7 pixel difference between a straight line and the lens' rendition at the center of the image. I'm not sure how the math is done when doing barrel distortion specs, but that's .5% of the total image height (8 pixels vs. 2000 pixels). As mentioned earlier in the thread, it is "simple" barrel distortion therefore easily fixed with a PS filter, but it is so minimal that in many cases it isn't worth fixing.

What is the closest focus distance of the Sigma vs. the Nikkor? Also how does the Sigma perform on 35mm bodies and film?
I'm curious about the lens too. All of the tests so far have been very informative and the Sigma appears to be a winner. I have the Sigma 17-35 and like it a lot, the only problem I have is that the shortest focus distance is something like 18inches.
My choices are the Sigma 12-24 or a Nikkor 14mm. I really like to get close and the 8inch focus distance with the 14 is very attractive. Guide me you wonderful test people.

the 12-24 focuses at about 6inches , I have even put a 500D on the front to cut that in hald as well, the flat front 77mm mount is a dream for wide angle lenses and the use of the Lee Filter rig

A question for Sectarian,
a little off topic, however, can you elaborate a little on how you are able to increase dynamic range by combining three separate exposures? You mentioned doing it on a photo earlier in this thread. Thanks.

Sectarian possibly does a similar thing to what I do with Astro photography.
Using a Red filtered, Green filtered, and Blue filtered image and layering them . ?
I'm convinced the 12-24 Sigma is a dynomite little lens.

YOu take a normal exposure , then you bracket an exposure specifically to expose for the highlites which is too dark in the mitones and shadows, and another exposure to expose for the shadow which is very bright indeed , then you stack these images on top of one another on layers and use masks to reveal the densities necessary to have all areas properly exposed

Thanks for providing the explanation. Jimmy, that is indeed how one increases dynamic range. If you want an automatic method that works with 2 shots, Fred's DRI Pro filter will do the job for you. Stacking the layers and working with layer masks, you can have more control.

Mozz,
I've been intending to thry three-shot, RGB color filtered photography for some time... You've reminded my of a sometimes forgotten goal. Thanks.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll give it a shot as soon as I get a chance.
Sectarian, I am very impressed with your interior photos. How much and what type of lighting do you use to get the great results?
