I would say that my good copy of the tamron was better than the 24-70.... but selling the tamron because i am not using my canon gear as often these days
I love the Tamron 28-75. Ditched it because it's not wide enough on my crop body. If I get a FF, I'll get the Tammy again. It's quiet for a non USM lens.
I use the Tamron 28-75 for weddings alongside my Canon 70-200 2.8L on the 5D. When I edit the photos in Lightroom or photoshop and print them out, there is virually no difference in quality between the 2... I am very happy with the Tamron.
I agree with this as well, I sold my 24-70L because the Tamron was as good or better in nearly all respects. The exception is bokeh, the L has a decided edge in bokeh, kind of hard to tell from this image though...L on the left has smoother discs, Tammy discs are brighter around the edge.
Maybe I'm the odd one out.
Owned a 28-75 until quite recently. Yes it was very sharp when compared to my L zooms, but I just didn't find the colours to be anything like as vivid, the Tammy being a lot more "flat". I was so unimpressed that the Tammy just had to go. At least it's brought in enough of a return to pay for most of the new 85mm F1.8.
I love my Tammy 28-75 lens. I was considering saving up for the 24-70 L but I couldn't convince myself after seeing a lot of pics taken with the Tamron. Here is a shot with the lens and my 5D.
I have the 5D and Tamron 28-75. I would only upgrade if Canon came out with something better then the current 24-70. Which pretty much for me means IS. The Tamron is so much cheaper and so close in image quality that I don't see the point of spending the extra money unless you need the additional build quality that the Canon offers. On the other hand, I have the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS and I would'nt trade it for the Sigma or Tamron 70-200.

My experience is the Canon 24-105L is slightly better than the Tamron 28-75 on my 5D, but for light weight combo, I am not sure is there any zoom len better than the 28-75 on 5D in this range. Good weight and performance for the price but does not means you can made a big difference with the Canon 24-70L. The weight of the 24-70L is really a big consideration for travelling.
I just ordered my 5D. I have heard so much good things it matching with the 24-70L (which I already have). Thank you for the comparison. Not much difference in quality
Really if you don't need the build, or USM AF, there's little reason to get the L except for the extra 4mm. Canon has slightly cooler colours, so I prefer the Tamron's hint of warmth and the Tamron is so much lighter and smaller. I compared a 24-70L to my Tamron thinking I would buy it, but the Tamron was much sharper wide open.
Let me say too that on a crop body the Tamron is about as good as it gets for a zoom. On my 20D it worked wonderfully and was tack sharp.
