Replacement failed Nill. I don't think I treat my cameras any rougher than a photojourno might. Of course I don't mollycoddle them like a camera club shooter does either. They earn me money and so they get used in all conditions to get the shot.
haha awesome quote!
I did a can count test on some work (newspaper) cameras and all were above 150k. How much did the new shutter cost you out of interest if you dont mind me asking?

Had to have another body to shoot weddings whilst the Mk II was in the shop for a new shutter, so I ordered a 1D Mk III which arrived on Thursday afternoon. Charged the battery and took about 20 frames to test it. It worked fine. I upgraded the firmware and put it in the bag for yesterday's wedding shoot.
Pull it out on the day to shoot the bride and get about 50 frames and then the dreaded err 99 pops up everytime I press the shutter. It gives me a message on the LCD about re-initializing the battery. Removing the battery and then putting it back in the camera gets me nowhere. I get a pre-flash from the 580EX II and the mirror goes up and stays up, but the bloody shutter doesn't activate. It's as though the mirror lockup has been triggered. If I keep pressing the shutter button it eventually reboots the camera.
ARGHHHH!!!!
I wonder how much I'll get for all this stuff if I trade it in on Nikon gear...
The serial number is 54xxxx and there is no blue dot on it. It will be going back to the seller on Monday, so I'll be stuck with the 40D and resurrecting the D60 as a backup until the 1D's are fixed or replaced....Show more →
ah mate, I feel for you! I have read about a similar problem. I hope you are a CPS member with that that gear!
I spoke with a Herald Sun sports shooter a few weekends ago and they are ditching ALL their MKIII's and getting Nikon D3's.
I got the exchange 1d3 on Monday. It works fine so far. I'm hoping that I will soon be joining the ranks of all those happy souls above who have told me about their 300K+ 1d's without a shutter failure...
I'll believe it when I see it!
Oh, the first repair cost me nothing, but it did cost PhotoTechnical $1563.00 under their extended warranty which they then didn't want to extend (understandably).
In my opinion, the Mark II cameras have an issue with their shutter. I am on my third shutter in my 1Ds II; the first two failed with less than 10K actuations on them. Every time this topic comes up, it seems like many people report significantly premature shutter failure. I'm kind of surprised this issue hasn't created more of a stir than it has, frankly. Perhaps that's because the failure is not typically catastrophic, so you can get it repaired at your convenience, and the repair is not terribly expensive or time consuming. It also helps that the Mark II is an awesome camera otherwise.
My 1d2 is now back with new shutter and hotshoe, but they have indicated that the filter atop the CMOS is marked. I can see a slight dark line on pictures of blue sky taken at F22, but it actually has the look of a smeared spot rather being straight-edged. I've got two weddings this weekend, so I'm not going to deal with it today. I'll give it a good wet clean when I get a chance during the week.
With all the instances of premature shutter failure doing the rounds in the threads here and elsewhere I'm with you galibier. I'd have thought that especially in the US, Canon might have had some litigation difficulties by now.
Great camera when it's working and I won't deny it is the best that I've owned to date, but two catastrophic failures that have damaged other components in the camera really takes the gloss off for me.
I know what a normal distribution curve is too BTW, but doesn't good QA/QC mean that you try to eliminate the tails that are beyond a standard deviation?
