I have alsways enjoyed my 100-400. I had the Bigma before and switched almost two years ago. The IS really helps, and I may be the minority but I like the push/pull zoom. I find it is faster and easier than a twist zoom. Here is a shot I took last summer with it.
wow...very nice. I'm going to take my family to either local safari or the zoo next weekend and give this lens a workout for sure. I didn't know if I can get use to the push/pull zoom either, but after a few hours I'm comfortable using it. I simply can not imagine using a twist zoom setup for this lens, it is going to take forever to zoom from one end to another! Though the tension ring is annoying, way too close to the MF ring so that's something that I'm still trying to get use to.
I've only had this lens a short time, but I've found it helps to put a large rubber band around the zoom tension ring. That way, I can control it with one hand by using the index finger and thumb, with one on the focus ring and the other on the tension ring and squeeze fingers together to twist the ring, then switch fingers to the opposite rings to reverse the ring or else turn your hand around.
I prefer the push-pull zoom for ability to control the zoom, but it does feel more tiring to hold your arm extended for a long time when shooting at frequently changing subject distances (like a soccer match) versus a ring that could be reached while holding the left arm closer to the chest, which is less tiring.

Took my 40D and 100-400L out for a workout yesterday, this lens definitely earned its ultimate zoo lens title, i'm very happy with the sharpness , contrast, and color it provide.
