p.2 #1 · Metz 58 Or Canon 580EX?

My Metz 58AF has performed admirably. In many ways an improvement over the 54, which I found produced better images than the 580's. The only thing I wish the 58AF had was a PC connect and the 54's dial for quick and easy manual control.

I currently own/use 3 Metz 54's. I love them! Recently, I came across this quote as I checked the 58's specs, "the new flash can even be used wirelessly with the Canon E-TTL remote system or the Nikon i-TTL remote system thanks to the integrated slave trigger unit".

Kevin, Carmen, any other Metz users care to comment on this?

I have had a 58 AF-1 for a year now and I am very happy with it. Second reflector is really great for fill when bouncing the main one and you can also adjust the ratio on it. Also, it has a usb connector and you can install the updates straight from your computer (if you ever need to do so). I believe that the 580II implemented the A mode after realizing what a great feature this is and that the Metz flash has it. Battery life is great. The only thing the 580II has and the 58 doesn't is a PC jack.

I have only used it as a "Master" to fire my other wireless flash. It has never failed. It is especially nice to be able to adjust remote flash output from the single on-camera unit.

The flash is also firmware upgradeable via a supplied mini USB cable. Currently, Windows only but it sounds like Mac support is coming.

I even used it as a slave with the Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Flash and although I didn't have the time to do extensive testing it seems to be working fine.
